Just a few days after it premiered at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival the drama “Fruitvale” has been acquired by The Weinstein Company in a multi-million dollar distribution deal. The partnership was reported by the industry website The Hollywood Reporter on Monday. “Fruitvale” which stars Alabama native and Academy Award winner Octavia Spencer, “Red Tails” star Michael B. Jordan, Melonie Diaz, Kevin Durand and Chad Michael Murray is in the US Dramatic Competition at the festival which kicked off last week.
The film which is directed by Ryan Coogler and produced by Spencer and fellow Oscar winner Forest Whitaker is based on the tragic death of Oscar Grant, a California man who was killed by BART police on New Year’s Day in 2009. Jordan portrays Grant in the film which follows the young man's final moments before his life ends.
