The main attraction for this weekend is the Baltimore Book Festival. Centered in Mt. Vernon, this is the 18th year for the annual literary event. It is three days of readings, signings and other book-related activities for all ages. Local forecasters are predicting fair weather for the event.
Local writers’ groups like the Maryland Romance Writers and the Baltimore Science Fiction Society (partnered with SFWA - the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America) have separate tents with programming scheduled all weekend. Friday’s topics include From Zeus to Zombies, Hot Paranormal Fiction, Diversity in SF: The Protagonist Looks Like Me and Chocolate and Romance.
Stages for food-oriented books, music and other activities are spread throughout the festival area. A special Children's Bookstore Stage has programing for the young and young-at-heart.
The Black Writers’ Guild and the Maryland Writers’ Association have many Maryland authors in their tents. Other authors can be found in the Authors Tent. Be sure to check the schedule as the authors vary from day to day.
New to the Baltimore Book Festival is the free smartphone app. Users can browse the events by author, exhibitor, schedule and more. There is a search field and a favorite icon for marking specific program items you don’t want to miss. The Baltimore Office of Promotion & the Arts has included both a festival map and directions in the app.
