As we move into the last full week in April, here are some of the events and monthly celebrations coming up in the Week Ahead:

April 1-30-- National Poetry Month

During this month discover ways to celebrate the beauty and power of poetry and learn more about the vibrant poetry scene in the Columbus metro area. Click here to learn about a special art project involving local poets to be completed during National Poetry Month.

April 1-30--Jazz Appreciation Month

April is set aside to appreciate and celebrate jazz--a truly great American musical art form. To learn about some of the events celebrating jazz on the local level, click here.

April 1-30--National Volunteer Month

In honor of all volunteers who give their time and service to make America even greater, April is designated National Volunteer Month and includes National Volunteer Week from April 21-27 this year.

April 26 Arbor Day—the last Friday in April

Arbor Day (from the Latin arbor, meaning tree) is designated as a holiday in which individuals and groups are encouraged to plant and care for trees. Take a look at some of the Arbor Day activities that will be taking place in the Columbus Metro area. Readers can also look for a forthcoming article on some of the trees mentioned in the Bible and enjoy a slide show of some of those trees.

Arbor Day on the Oval—OSU—April 26, 2013

The public is invited to join the Friends of Chadwick Arboretum & Learning Gardens to celebrate Arbor Day on the Oval. Activities include dedicating several newly planted trees and announcing the recipients of our Lorax Award, the highest recognition given to those who speak for the trees.

In addition, the celebration includes the Tree Campus USA certification, as the organization enters its second year of this high achievement presented to The Ohio State University by the National Arbor Day Foundation.

Arbor Day Festival--April 27, 2013

Arbor Day--a celebration of trees and nature—this annual outdoor event is sponsored in part by the Energy Cooperative. Families can expect a fun-filled day with lots of hands-on learning opportunities, crafts, displays, and tree climbing. The festival features Dr. Insecta and his Incredible Unforgettable Bug Lab Experience, a fusion of entomology and magic that will delight all ages. Arboretum staff will be on hand showcasing and selling nursery plants. Plus, the first 250 families have an opportunity to take home their own tree to plant in honor of Arbor Day.

Earth Day—Stand Together—April 27, 2013

On Saturday, April 27 participants will Stand Together to enjoy favorite local bands, food trucks, along with environmental groups, green businesses, and more at a Columbus Commons celebration commemorating Earth Day 2013 accomplishments.
