The week ahead: 'Transcendence,' 'Heaven Is for Real,' 'Cesar Chavez' and more

Johnny Depp plays a brilliant scientist who dies and comes back to virtual life in a computer system that he invented in the sci-fi thriller "Transcendence." Greg Kinnear is a pastor whose young son claims he's been to heaven in the drama "Heaven Is for Real," which is based on a true story. Michael Peña portrays a real-life civil-rights activist in the biopic "Cesar Chavez." Those are among the movies that premiere on demand from July 21 to July 27, 2014. (Check with your cable or satellite provider for a lineup of on-demand channels on your system.)

July 22, 2014: “Transcendence” (Same day as DVD; weeks before Netflix and Redbox releases), Rated PG-13.

Dr. Will Caster (played by Johnny Depp) is the foremost researcher in the field of Artificial Intelligence, working to create a sentient machine that combines the collective intelligence of everything ever known with the full range of human emotions. His highly controversial experiments have made him famous, but they have also made him the prime target of anti-technology extremists who will do whatever it takes to stop him. However, in their attempt to destroy Will, they inadvertently become the catalyst for him to succeed — to be a participant in his own transcendence. Also starring Rebecca Hall, Paul Bettany, Morgan Freeman, Cillian Murphy and Kate Mara.

July 22, 2014: “Heaven Is for Real” (Same day as DVD), Rated PG.

In the drama "Heaven Is for Real" (based on a true story), Greg Kinnear stars as Todd Burpo, a small-town pastor whose son Colton (played by Connor Corum) claims to have visited heaven during a near-death experience. Colton recounts the details of his amazing journey with childlike innocence and speaks matter-of-factly about things that happened before his birth — things he couldn't possibly know. Todd and his family are then challenged to examine the meaning from this remarkable event.

July 22, 2014: “Sabotage” (Same day as DVD; weeks before Netflix and Redbox releases), Rated R.

In the action flick "Sabotage," Arnold Schwarzenegger plays the leader an elite DEA task force that takes on the world's deadliest drug cartels. When the team successfully executes a high-stakes raid on a cartel safe house, they think their work is done — until, one-by-one, the team members mysteriously start to be eliminated. Also starring Terrence Howard, Sam Worthington, Olivia Williams, Joe Manganiello and Mirielle Enos.

July 22, 2014: “Tyler Perry's The Singles Moms Club” (Same day as DVD), Rated PG-13.

When five struggling single moms put aside their differences to form a support group, they find inspiration and laughter in their new sisterhood, and help each other overcome the obstacles that stand in their way. Starring Nia Long, Amy Smart, Cocoa Brown, Terry Crews, William Levy, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Zulay Henao and Tyler Perry.

July 22, 2014: “Cesar Chavez” (Same day as DVD), Rated PG-13.

Directed by Diego Luna, "Cesar Chavez" chronicles the birth of a modern American movement led by famed civil-rights leader and labor organizer, Cesar Chavez (played by Michael Peña). Torn between his duties as a husband and father and his commitment to bringing dignity and justice to others, Chavez embraced non-violence as he battled greed and prejudice in his struggle for the rights of farm workers. His triumphant journey is a remarkable testament to the power of one individual's ability to change the system.

July 22, 2014: "Cuban Fury" (Same day as DVD), Rated R.

"Cuban Fury" is a romantic comedy about finding the confidence to fulfill your dreams. July 22, 2014: “Skanks”

In the winter of 2012, a small community theatre in Birmingham, Alabama, mounted an original drag musical, "Skanks in a One Horse Town." The documentary "Skanks" follows the actors and creators from rehearsal through performance and after, at work in their day jobs and at their homes. The cast of amateur performers — some gay, some straight, all unique — bond to form a family of sorts while creating the unconventional show in a conservative Southern city. "Skanks" explores the bravery of these people, their humor and the meaning that theater has in their lives.

July 22, 2014: “Made in America” (Same day as DVD)

When it comes to women, playboy Mike (played by John Stamos) has all the right moves. So when Mike’s buddies (played by Michael Rapaport and Bryan Callen) ask for advice on how to reconnect with their wives, Mike figures he’ll share some secrets and help the guys regain their marriage mojo. But when Mike’s lessons start backfiring with hilarious results, it takes a beautiful, no-nonsense friend (played by Tika Sumpter) to show Mike he still has a thing or two to learn about relationships.

July 25, 2014: "The Damned" (Before theatrical release)

"The Damned" (formerly titled "Gallows Hill") follows David Reynolds (played by Peter Facinelli), an American widower who had a Colombian-born wife, who flies to Bogota with his new fiancée (Sophia Myles) to retrieve his rebellious teenage daughter Jill (played by Nathalia Ramos). En route to the city of Medellin, a car accident leaves them stranded in a rundown isolated inn. When they discover the old innkeeper has locked a young girl in the basement, they are determined to set her free. But have they made a terrible mistake? Also starring Carolina Guerra and Sebastian Martinez.

July 25, 2014: “Come Back to Me” (Same day as theatrical release), Rated R.

Sarah (played by Katie Walder) and Josh McLaren (played by Matt Passmore) are a young married couple living in suburban Las Vegas. Shortly after a car accident, Sarah begins to suffer a series of disturbing memory lapses and frequent blackouts that seem to be increasing in intensity. Unsure of what is happening, and feeling as though she is losing her mind, Sarah comes to learn she is pregnant. To add to her shock, she subsequently discovers that her husband is sterile. As her marriage and world begin to fall apart, she makes a desperate attempt to find the truth by planting a hidden camera in her home. What she discovers is both horrific and life-altering and involves a dark secret about her neighbor Dale (played by Nathan Keyes) that proves to be even more far-reaching than anyone could imagine.
