Running is a great aerobic exercise for diabetics. If you have not run in years, simply begin by walking. Start by walking 30 minutes a day. Work up to running. Many of the 5k races also are open for walkers as well.
The Lancaster Road Runners Club (LRRC) holds regularly scheduled runs on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday. Every Sunday LRRC members meet at Long’s Park for a run from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. Tuesday’s run is the Winter Run in Long’s Park at 6:30 p.m. Thursday runs vary in location.
The Lancaster Group of the Sierra Club will hold its 3d Annual Polar Bear 5K Trail Run/Hike on Saturday 19 January in the Lancaster County Park. The trail run/hike will begin and end at Pavilion 22, known as the Kiwanis Lodge. Race fees are $20 if received by Monday, 31 December and $25 after that. Next Sunday, on 20 January, the Frozen Foot 5K Race Series begins in Elizabethtown at the Frozen . The other races are 17 February and 17 March. They are all held at Elizabethtown College. The races all begin at 2 p.m. and they benefit the Christ Church UCC Youth Group. For more information, go to http://www.frozenfoot.com.

Lancaster runners can Brave the Race on 6 April at the Octorara High School. Registration begins at 7 a.m. The 10K begins at 8 a.m. The one mile fun run begins at 8:15 a.m. and the 5K begins one hour later. Brave runners may run both the 5k and the 10K for just one entry fee. The race benefits the Octorara Cross Country, Track & Field Boosters. Octorara sits off Route 41 and Highland Road. Registration is open until 4 April 2013. Registration is open for the 5th Annual Garden Spot Village Marathon. The marathon will be 6 April. Enjoy the scenic countryside through Amish farmland and the Welsh Mountains. Registration is open for Shadey’s Rugged Run. The Run is q 3.5 mile muddy obstacle course slated for Saturday, 27 April at the Lancaster Bible College, 901 Eden Rd. The registration fee is $65 if you register by 15 February. Between 15 February and 15 March the registration fee is $72. From 15 March through 12 April, the fee is $80. Registration closes on Friday, 12 April. The Run benefits both the Lancaster Bible College Athletic Department and Penn State Hershey Children’s Miracle Network. The Girls On The Run 5K will be held 18 May at F&M College. Girls on the Run is an international program designed for girls in grades three through eight challenging them to celebrate themselves and recognize their own gifts and talents. Registration for the 14th Annual Amos Herr 5K Honey Run, slated for Sunday, 25 August, is also open. The Run benefits restoration projects at the 1852 Herr Family Homestead in Landisville and Hempfield Area Recreation Commission scholarships.
