The state may be in the deep freeze this week, but the races for conference championships are just starting to get warm on the hardwood. The Suburban East is one of those conferences that got very interesting last week; after a win Tuesday over 4A #10 East Ridge, the Roseville Raiders (#3 in 4A) were upended 80-71 at Woodbury on Friday. The loss puts Roseville and East Ridge back in a tie atop the Suburban East with 6-1 records; Woodbury and White Bear Lake are hot on their heels with 5-2 marks. White Bear will have a chance to draw even with Roseville on Tuesday night when they host the Raiders, while East Ridge will host a Stillwater team who, at 4-3 in the conference, would get right back in the mix with a victory.
The Missota Conference currently features two teams ranked in the 3A top 10; however, it’s 4A Shakopee who’s gotten out to the quick start. They’re the only undefeated team in Missota play at 3-0, with Farmington a half game behind them at 3-1 and then the two ranked teams, #3 Holy Angels and #9 New Prague, joining Chaska at 2-1. Holy Angels hosts New Prague Tuesday night in one of the ranked team matchups this week, while Shakopee looks to keep their good start going with games at Chaska and at home against Red Wing.
Up in the northwest part of the state, 2A #1 Pelican Rapids can take control of the Heart O’ Lakes Conference this week. To do so, the undefeated Vikings will need to pick up road wins against the two teams with one loss in the conference- #6 Hawley and perennial power Perham. The Vikings travel to Hawley on Monday night to make up a game that was postponed earlier in the season; they end their week with the trip to Perham to take on the Yellowjackets.
Of course, wind and cold could rearrange the schedule…that’s January in Minnesota.
