January 22/23: Chinese New Year: Chinese New Year occurs two new moons before the first day of spring, in 2011, on March 20. Chinese New Year is celebrated based on Beijing, China time, thus even though the new moon is on the 22nd Hawai`i time, we celebrate on the 23rd. The new moon before the first day of spring occurs on March 4 this year; the new moon before that occurs on February 3. The Hilo Chinese New Year celebration, however, will be on Saturday, February 11. For more information on lunar/Chinese New Year visit the Bishop Museum Planetarium, and Family Culture.

January 24: Kailua-Kona; Kailua Public Library; FOLK Annual Meeting / Book Club: The Friends of the Library, Kona, will be holding their Annual Meeting at 10am followed by a short reception with refreshments. Current FOLK members are encouraged to attend, as well as those interested in becoming members. Following the reception, the Book Club will meet at approximately 11:30 PM. This meeting date is a change from the usual third Tuesday of the month due to the library closure for Martin Luther King Day. The book for this month is "Happiness Project", by Gretchen Rubin. January 25: Hilo; Palace Theater; Hawai`iana Live! "Nā Hulu Manu, Beloved Elders"  Join us as Manu and Leilehua share stories from their own kūpuna. Special guests, Uncle Stan Kaina and Pi`ilani Rodrigues share hula from our beloved hulu manu. Hawai`iana Live! is now in its sixth year, providing a different program each Wednesday, following the changing Hawaiian seasons, exploring different aspects of Hawaiian history and natural history. January 25; Kailua-Kona; West Hawai`i Civic Center; Hanohano o Kona / Honoring Kona 2012Lecture Series: "Ka `Ōlelo Hawai`i / The Hawai'ian Language: Revitalizing the Language Through Our Children" is part of a monthly community lecture series for 2012 that spotlights local and state speakers on a wide variety of cultural and historical subjects. The staff and students of the K-12 Hawai'ian language immersion school, Ke Kula `o `Ehunuikaimalino, will share ha`i olelo (talk) and mele (songs) and "continue to revitalize the Hawai'ian language through children". Also, the members of Unuehu, a branch of the larger hula community of learners of the Hawai`i Community College's Unukupukupu, will be sharing their mele (songs), oli (chants) and hula (dance). Unukupukupu is the name of the rigorous, didactic and experiential hula curricula of Dr. Taupouri Tangaro. Presented by Kona Historical Society, in cooperation with the County of Hawai'i, this lecture series is a gift from the Society to the community that has supported it for so long. January 26-28; Keauhou; Keauhou Beach Resort; `Iolani Luahine Hula Festival:
A festival honoring Aunty 'Iolani Luahine, one of Hawai'is premiere performers and cultural treasures. The Festival will include a visit to 'Iolani's birthplace in Napo'op'o Village, hula workshops and presentations, and an educational "challenge" to Kumu Hula, with a prize for the one who best demonstrates the values of 'Iolani Luahine in regard to education and Hawaiian culture. Fee for hula workshops; evening musical entertainment will be offered to the public for a modest donation, with tickets available at the door. At 4pm on Thursday, Jan. 26th, Keoki Kahumoku will host an 'Ukulele Jam, and on Friday, January 27th, at 6:30pm, Aunty Diana Aki, the Songbird of Miloli'i, will perform. January 28, Kīlauea; Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park; Pa Hula; The Arts and Traditions of Hula at Kīlauea: This Volcano Art Center program features a Hula Kahiko Informance with kumu Leilehua Yuen and Manu Josiah. A 50-minute narrated demonstration of the preparation, protocol and offering of traditional hula and chant at the hula platform in Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park. This outdoor presentation takes place rain or shine at the hula platform located near VAC Gallery. The audience is encouraged to bring sitting mat and sun/rain gear. 10:30AM – 11:30PM; Volcano Art Center Gallery is located on Crater Rim Drive in Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park, next to the Visitors' Center.
