The week ahead: 'Frankenweenie,' 'Dredd,' 'Hit & Run,' 'Compliance' and more

Tim Burton's animated film "Frankenweenie," a reboot of the Judge Dredd story, and real-life couple Dax Shepard and Kristen Bell in a road-trip action comedy are among the movies that premiere on demand from January 7 to January 13, 2013. January 8, 2013: "Frankenweenie" (Same day as DVD; available in 3-D) Rated PG.

"Frankenweenie" is a stop-motion animated film from writer/director Tim Burton. The movie tells the story of what happens when a boy's beloved dead dog is brought back to life under supernatural circumstances.

January 8, 2013: "Dredd" (Same day as DVD; available in 3-D) Rated R.

"Dredd" is a remake/reboot of the 1995 movie "Judge Dredd" that starred Sylvester Stallone in the title role. In 2012's "Dredd," Karl Urban plays the stern law enforcer in a futuristic world. And this time, he's after a gang of drug dealers, and he's mentoring a reluctant trainee (played by Olivia Thirlby), who has psychic powers.

January 8, 2013: "Hit & Run" (Same day as DVD, weeks before Netflix and Redbox releases) Rated PG-13.

Live-in lovers Charlie Bronson and Annie Bean (played by real-life couple Dax Shepard and Kristen Bell) have a seemingly idyllic life in California when Charlie's past comes back to haunt him. It turns out that he is really a former bank robber named Yul Perrkins, and he had his identity changed under a witness-protection program because he testified against a partner in crime (played by Bradley Cooper), who is now out of prison and seeking revenge.

January 8, 2013: "House at the End of the Street" (Before DVD, weeks before Netflix release) Rated PG-13.

Long before she made the first "Hunger Games" movie, Jennifer Lawrence made the horror flick "House at the End of the Street." She plays a teen who moves to a neighborhood that is haunted by a murderer who may still be on the loose.

January 8, 2013: "Compliance" (Same day as DVD) Rated R.

Based on a true story, "Compliance" is a suspenseful drama about a fast-food employee (Dreama Walker) who is accused of stealing at her workplace and is detained in a back room by her supervisor (Ann Dowd) until the authorities arrive. The accusation comes from someone who has called the supervisor on the phone and identifies himself as a police officer, and he gives the supervisor increasingly unusual instructions to obey.

January 8, 2013: "Samsara" (Same day as DVD) Rated PG-13.

According to the official website, this documentary "explores the wonders of our world from the mundane to the miraculous, looking into the unfathomable reaches of man’s spirituality and the human experience. Neither a traditional documentary nor a travelogue, Samsara takes the form of a nonverbal, guided meditation."

January 8, 2013: "A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III" (Before theatrical release)

Charles Swan III (played by Charlie Sheen) is a graphic designer and a womanizer in the 1970s whose life goes into turmoil after his girlfriend Ivana (played by Katheryn Winnick) breaks up with him. Bill Murray and Jason Schwartzman are among the co-stars in this comedy.

January 10, 2013: "Riddle" (Before DVD release)

College student Holly Teller (Elisabeth Harnois) is drawn to the mysterious small town of Riddle, Pennsylvania in search of her missing brother. Against the will of the local sheriff (Val Kilmer) and town elder (William Sadler), she begins to unravel a mystery connected to an abandoned psychiatric hospital on the edge of town, uncovering a terrifying past the town in determined to keep hidden.

January 11, 2013: "$ellebrity" (Same day as theatrical release) Rated TV-PG.

"$ellebrity" is a documentary that explores the big business of celebrity photography. Famed celebrity photographer Kevin Mazur directed this movie, which includes red-carpet events and the antics of paparazzi, as well interviews with several paparazzi-hounded stars such as Jennifer Aniston, Salma Hayek, Kid Rock, Sarah Jessica Parker and Jennifer Lopez.

January 11, 2013: "Bad Kids Go to Hell" (Before DVD release) Rated R.

In this action thriller, six prep school kids from Crestview Academy, home to the spoiled offspring of society's elite, find themselves stuck in detention on a frightfully dark and stormy Saturday afternoon. During their eight-hour incarceration, each of the six kids falls victim to a horrible "accident" until only one of them remains.
