The Week Ahead for Nature Lovers - Feb. 3 - Feb. 9, 2013, Rockford, IL

The month of February promises to bring snow and more outside activities. Mark your calendar for the coming events, for yourself, friends, or family. Some of the activities are being held indoors with the intent of using the techniques outside.

Sunday, Feb. 3, Nicholas Conservatory & Gardens, Make it Take it, from 11 am - 2:00 pm. You can drop in anytime between the hours of 11 am - 2 pm for fun, free with admission for family crafts project led by NCG staff.

Wednesday, Feb. 6 - 27; 5:30 - 6:30 pm. Tai Chi, Nicholas Conservatory & Gardens. Refresh your mind, body, and spirit with this calming Asian form of exercise. The class works to strengthen your body, while focusing your thoughts through gentle movements appropriate for adults of all ages and fitness levels. Thursday, Feb. 7 - 28, 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm. Yoga at Nicholas Conservatory & Gardens. The Yoga strengthen, stretch, and gently tone your way to a healthy mind, body, and soul while being surrounded by tropical greenery. Saturday, Feb. 9, 1:00 - 5:30 pm, at Angelic Organics Learning Center. It will be designing a sustainable revolution: An Introduction to Permaculture. Learn the basic ideas, ethics and principles of Permaculture, a method for designing sustainable human landscapes using patterns of nature. Saturday Feb. 9, 10:00 am - 12:00 pm. Severson Dells Nature Center, Fireside Readings. Join Severson Dells Biologist/Educator Greg Keilback for warm fireside readings of Sig Olson. There is no greater way to learn about the outdoors than to immerse oneself in the descriptive writings of Sig Olson. The readings will be followed by group discussion. Saturday, Feb. 9 - 10:00 am - Noon, Welty Environmental Center, Feathered Friends - Bird Feeding and ID Workshop. The wookshop is focused on winter getting to be too long for your taste? Imagine how it is for the birds. At this workshop we will go over basic identification tips you can use from your window to tell which bird is which. They will also go over what feed attracts which birds, and make a simple feeder or two. You should bring an empty 21 plasstic bottle. Saturday, Feb. 9 - Atwood Center (Atwood Park) Atwood Wanderings-Birds of a Feather. 9 am - 12pm. You can go on a hike to find out what birds do in the winter. The hike will include looking for birds in their habitats and winter tree identification. Indoor hands on activities will include bird beak simulations and bird feeders. A snack of hot cocoa and a cookie will be provided, for ages 6 - 12 and the cost for residents if $7.00, non-residents is $9.00. Pre-registration is required. If you register online for both morning and afternoon programs for the same day, you will get a discount of $2.00. Please call (815) 987 - 8800.

Saurday, Feb. 9, & 16th, Atwood Center will be having A Walk Through Time. 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm. They will take a walk back in time to experience a bit of what life was like. Outdoor activities will include archery, Native American honor games and an animal tracking hike. There will be indoor hands on activities and participants will make a Duck Effigy Pot. Hot cocoa and a cookie will be provided after the hike. For ages 6 - 12, the cost for residents are $7.00 and non-residents $9.00. Pre-registration is required. These programs will meet the requirements for Cub Scouts and Brownie/Junior badgers.
