The week ahead: 'Flight,' 'Alex Cross,' 'Here Comes the Boom' and more

Denzel Washington as an alcoholic plane pilot, Tyler Perry as a police detective, and Kevin James as a mixed-martial-arts fighter are featured in three of the movies that premiere on demand from February 4 to February 10, 2013. February 5, 2013: "Flight" (Same day as DVD) Rated R.

In this Oscar-nominated role, Denzel Washington plays William "Whip" Whitaker, an alcoholic pilot of commercial planes, who pulls off a daring flight maneuver that saves many lives when his plane crashes due to an equipment malfunction. The problem is that he was drunk and high on cocaine while flying, and now he's under investigation.

February 5, 2013: "Alex Cross" (Same day as DVD) Rated R.

In this crime thriller, Tyler Perry plays psychologist/police detective Alex Cross, who goes on the hunt for a serial killer named Picasso (played by Mathew Fox). The two face off in a high-stakes game of cat and mouse, but when the mission gets personal, Cross is pushed to the edge of his moral and psychological limits.

February 5, 2013: "Here Comes the Boom" (Same day as DVD) Rated PG.

In the comedy "Here Comes the Boom," former collegiate wrestler Scott Voss (Kevin James) is a 42-year-old apathetic biology teacher in a failing high school. When cutbacks threaten to cancel the music program and lay off its teacher (played by Henry Winkler,) Scott begins to raise money by moonlighting as a mixed martial arts fighter. Everyone thinks Scott is crazy — most of all the school nurse, Bella (played by Salma Hayek) — but in his quest, Scott gains something he never expected as he becomes a sensation that rallies the entire school.

February 5, 2013: "Celeste and Jesse Forever" (Same day as DVD) Rated R.

This comedy is about ambitious Celeste (played by Rashida Jones) and slacker Jesse (played by Andy Samberg), two best friends who met in high school, married young, and are growing apart. Now 30 years old, they decide to get divorced and attempt to stay best friends while pursuing other relationships. This plan is not as simple as they had imagined.

February 5, 2013: "Brooklyn Castle" (Weeks before DVD, Netflix & Redbox) Rated TV-G.

This documentary tells the stories of five members of the chess team at a below-the-poverty-line, inner-city junior high school that has won more national championships than any other in the country. The film follows the challenges these kids face in their personal lives as well as on the chessboard, and is as much about the sting of their losses as it is about the anticipation of their victories.

In this drama, an estranged father and son (played by John Slattery and Zach Gilford), both on the verge of starting new families, accidentally end up in the same country house with their girlfriends. As the weekend devolves into an awkward reckoning, both couples find themselves questioning their future.

February 5, 2013: "A Late Quartet" (Same day as DVD, weeks before Netflix & Redbox) Rated R.

"A Late Quartet" is about the personal entanglements and dramas that ensue when the beloved cellist (played by Christopher Walker) of a world-renowned string quartet receives a life-changing diagnosis, and the group's future suddenly hangs in the balance. Suppressed emotions, competing egos and uncontrollable passions threaten to derail years of friendship and collaboration between the other three members of the group (played by Philip Seymour Hoffman, Catherine Keener and Mark Ivanir).

February 5, 2013: "The Playroom" (Same day as DVD) Rated TV-MA.

John Hawkes, Molly Parker, Olivia Harris and Cody Linley star in this drama set in 1970s American suburbia. While Maggie and her younger siblings spend the night telling each other stories in the attic, their parents downstairs put on airs and entertain guests over the course of a gin-soaked evening. The family is eventually forced to confront the truth behind their betrayals and life disappointments.

February 8, 2013: "Would You Rather" (Same day as theatrical release) Rated TV-MA.

In this psychological thriller, eight desperate individuals are invited to a dinner party at a mansion and are forced to play a sadistic game of Would You Rather, where the winner will be awarded untold amounts of money. But as the game progresses, the dilemmas that the players face grow increasingly deadly. The movie's cast includes Brittany Snow, Jeffrey Combs and Sasha Grey.
