Mushrooms - huzzah! Are there any who don’t love them? Hobbit or no, mushrooms are a true gift of nature. And how grand that they now so readily available and we have access to so many different verities. Not all that long ago, the selection was limited to the basic, white mushroom, if you could find fresh mushrooms at all. Now of course, not only are they available nearly everywhere, but the selection is myriad.
And what a grand opportunity for all you mushroom epicures out there. The Relish Culinary Center in Healdsburg is offering you the opportunity to get up close and personal with the delectable fungus. They are offering an entire weekend dedicated to the delectable pursuit of mushrooming. Each morning chef Elissa Rubin-Mahon, past president and founding culinary chairperson of the Sonoma County Mycological Association willlead field trips into the surrounding fields and woodlands during which you will learn how to safely collect and identify local species of edible mushrooms.
The resulting harvest will then be taken back to the Relish Culinary Center’s kitchens to be prepared, in a variety of ways, including preserving. And of course you will be able to dine on the fruits of your labors.
This weekend long event offers you a unique opportunity to become acquainted with a variety of local mushroom species, how to identify them and how to prepare them.
Here you will find more information about the Mushroom Weekend and how to register.
