The Week Ahead: Exotic animals as pets?

The week ahead will feature the amazing world of exotic pets and those who privately own or closely work with them.

We will highlight some of the different species of exotic pets, trainers, veterinarians, rescues, owners, care and laws, along with many other issues surrounding this intriguing world.

Exotic pet is loosely defined as any pet that is not a traditional household pet other than a cat, dog, fish, rabbit or horse. Can we say, a bit out of the ordinary?

Alot of the pets deemed, "exotic" are being seen more frequently in our local area as every day, household pets. Some of the more common pets may include, turtles, ferrets, hamsters, guinea pigs, birds, crabs, spiders, reptiles, amphibians, pigs, llamas and goats. A large majority of the exotic pets are now in more urban and local areas and used for the breeding trade or human entertainment, while others simply like these different species and keep them as personal pets to live with and love. Basically, the definition of exotic pet is open to interpretation in alot of situations.
Much controversy surrounds the private ownership and breeding of these species who breed more readily in captivity and are considered as being kept in confined captivity away from their true and healthy, natural element.
Obviously, just as in any other animal and pet ownership, there are laws governing the keeping of exotic pets. One must always check their local laws on the legal possession of these animals as regulatory laws vary between close in proximity locations.

Just remember, if you choose to be an exotic animal owner, please research intensively for the proper care necessary to keep your pet happy and healthy. This including proper nutrients, food, vetting and a safe and spacious habitat that is comparable to their natural environment.

Tomorrow:  Resources to care for exotic animals.
