This week, there are a couple of events readers may want to put on their calenders. James Drake of 5kInsight is doing another Red Epic camera demo on Wed the 14th. The demo will be held at the Colorado Film School at 6pm at a meeting of the Denver Final Cut Pro Users Group. According to the 5kInsight website, “This presentation will focus on the post-production side of working with REDCODE RAW.” Find more information at about the presentation here. The event will also be streamed live if you can’t make it over to the film school.
This week’s Emerging Filmmakers Project should be a real treat. Denver's longest-running showcase for local filmmakers, The EFP presents its Holiday-inspired night of movies: "The Nice Then Naughty Indie Holiday Film Spectacular!"
Said longtime host Patrick Sheridan, "Okay, it's really just a regular EFP with a couple of Holiday-themed movies thrown in because people seem to like special Holiday events this time of year for some reason, so I figured what the heck."
The night features a couple of PSA's made by local filmmakers, including one for the Rocky Mountain Feline Rescue (RMFR) by Becky Hendricks (wife of well-known cinematographer Ken Hendricks) and three short PSAs for the Colorado Business Group on Health by Jim Brennan. "I've been trying to show Jim's PSAs at an EFP for some time because they show a unique way that PSAs and industrials can be done in the hands of a talented filmmaker. They address a problem that is very real this time of year: Depression. The fact that the PSAs are very funny despite the subject matter speaks of Jim's talents as a filmmaker. "
"Another unique film is J. L. Abplanalp's 'Grandpa's Story' because it uses sock puppets to tell a less-than-warm Christmas story,” said Sheridan.
The night also features four mini docs by students of Marty Otañez's Culture of Development and Globalization course at the University of Colorado-Denver's Anthropology Department. Said Sheridan, "Marty and his students always bring unique works that show the power of moving pictures to tell stories that might otherwise go untold. The advancements in digital video equipment have really made these kinds of stories possible."
Kicking off the "Naughty" section are four episodes of The Nix Brother's hilarious web-based series "The Grawlix" which follows three of Denver's most unique stand-up comedians. Finishing off the night is the fifth annual screening of Sheridan's own "The Best Christmas Ever," an offensive tale of two rednecks who catch Santa raiding their fridge.
Screening starts at 8:00 p.m. Tickets are $5. The Bug Theatre is at 3654 Navajo St., Denver, CO 80232. For more info, visit The Bug’s website.
