The week ahead in central Ohio: March 18-24, 2013

Christian Spirituality Examiner: Monday, March 18 through Sunday, March 24, 2013

As we move into the third week of March, here are some of the events and celebrations coming up in the Week Ahead in Central Ohio:

Women’s History Month—March 1-31, 2013

National Women’s History Month sets aside the month of March to celebrate some of the achievements of women and to increase consciousness and knowledge of women's history. We will recognize some of the contributions of women in Central Ohio and elsewhere. Click here to check out an article highlighting some of the local events connected to Women’s History Month. Take a look at a tribute to seven Central Ohio women who made history.

Irish-American Heritage Month—March 1-31, 2013

Irish-American Heritage Month is a period set aside to recognize “the contributions made by the tens of millions of Americans who trace their heritage to the Emerald Isle.” Click here to learn more about the month-long celebration and to view a couple of videos showing the influence of the Irish jig in tap dancing and other dance forms.

First Day of Spring (vernal equinox)--March 20, 2013

After much anticipation in response to the predictions of both groundhogs, Punxsutawney Phil and Buckeye Chuck, for its early arrival, the first day of spring—the vernal equinox--occurs on March 20 of this year. Signs of spring abound in Central Ohio and across the nation. Click here to learn more about this occasion.

Palm Sunday--March 24, 2013

Occurring the final Sunday before Easter or the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ, Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week. Some Christian churches distribute and display palms (and sometimes pussy willows) on Palm Sunday, commemorating the triumphal entry by Christ into Jerusalem, where palm branches were placed in His path prior to his arrest and ultimate crucifixion and resurrection.
