The week ahead in Central Ohio: Jan. 28-Feb. 3, 2013

Christian Spirituality Examiner: Monday, Jan. 28, through Sunday, Feb. 3, 2013

As we move from the last week of January into the first week of February, here are some of the events and celebrations coming up in the Week Ahead in Central Ohio:

Inspire Your Heart with Art Day—Jan. 31, 2013

“Inspire Your Heart with Art Day,” celebrates art and the effect it can have on your heart. The last day of January is thus designated as a time to elevate the heart and soul through observing and/or creating works of art. To develop an appreciation for Art in its many forms, a great local place to start is the Columbus Museum of Art. Look for a forthcoming article regarding two special exhibits that are part of the Columbus Bicentennial Celebration.

Monthly Celebrations--Feb. 1-28, 2013

Black History Month celebrates the accomplishments of African Americans who have contributed to the success of the nation in many arenas. We will recognize some of the contributions of African Americans in Central Ohio and elsewhere. Be sure to check out the Black History slide show, featuring some of the people featured on Black Heritage Postage Stamps.

Sweet Potato Month not only celebrates this versatile vegetable, but a notable African American scientist, George Washington Carver, developed hundreds of use of both the peanut and the sweet potato. Click here to learn more about his accomplishments and enjoy a slide show centered on this remarkable pioneer in botany.

American Heart Month Feb 1-28, 2013

As a nationwide push to raise heart disease awareness, Feb. is American Heart Month, and it is sponsored annually by the American Heart Association.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States; one in every three deaths is from heart disease and stroke, equal to 2,200 deaths per day. According to Department of Health and Human Services Secretary, Kathleen Sebelius:

"Heart disease takes the lives of far too many people in this country, depriving their families and communities of someone they love and care for—a father, a mother, a wife, a friend, a neighbor, a spouse. With more than 2 million heart attacks and strokes a year, and 800,000 deaths, just about all of us have been touched by someone who has had heart disease, heart attack, or a stroke."

Women’s Heart Week--Feb. 1-7, 2013

Women’s Heart Foundation, a nationally recognized program, seeks to raise awareness about the number one killer of American women: heart disease. The program introduces fun-filled activities to promote healthier living. View the Women’s Heart Week video online at www.womensheart.org. This is a turnkey program for health sites around the country to commemorate using the Seven Focus Days for women’s heart wellness and awareness. Suggested activities include a Red Dress luncheon, free screenings and Heart Center tours and presentations.

Wear Red Day—Feb. 1, 2013

On Friday, Feb. 1, National Wear Red Day®, Americans will wear red to show their support for women's heart health. Find out more about the color red and the Red Dress symbol and learn about local events scheduled to support women’s health matters of the heart.
