As we move into the fourth week of the New Year, here are some of the events and celebrations coming up in the Week Ahead in Central Ohio:

Martin Luther King Day—Jan. 21, 2013

Martin Luther King Day, a federal holiday held on the third Monday of January, celebrates the life and achievements of Martin Luther King Jr., an influential American civil rights leader. He is most well-known for his campaigns to end racial segregation on public transport and for racial equality in the United States.

Celebration of Life Day—Jan. 22, 2013

While the entire month of January is designated as “Celebration of Life Month,” “Celebration of Life Day” is particularly significant to Columbus, Ohio because of the bronze “Celebration of Life” statue erected in Veteran’s Memorial Park in downtown Columbus. Remembering Roe—Jan. 22, 2013

Remembering Roe, a national event that provides an opportunity to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the U.S. Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion, will take place on Jan. 22, 2013. The day will be marked with a national day of prayer and fasting to end the violence of abortion. From 3-4 p.m. EST participants can pray with the National Pro-Life Religious Council in a special “hour of prayer” webcast.

The National Pro-life Religious Council, a Christian coalition that acknowledges Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and called to affirm and witness to the Biblical standard of the value, dignity, and sanctity of human life, will also host other events to commemorate the historic passage of the Supreme Court decision.

Week of Prayer for Christian Unity—Jan. 18-25, 2013

Traditionally celebrated between 18-25 January (in the northern hemisphere) or at Pentecost (in the southern hemisphere), the Week of Prayer enters into congregations and parishes all over the world. Pulpits are exchanged, and special ecumenical celebrations and prayer services are arranged. Click here to learn more about the week and its theme for this year.

CJO Tribute to Mother of the Civil Rights Movement in "Suite Rosa"—Jan. 25-26, 2013

Under the direction of Byron Stripling, the Columbus Jazz Orchestra (CJO) will celebrate the courage, dignity, and legacy of "the mother of the modern Civil Rights Movement," Rosa Parks in “Suite Rosa” In connection with the 100th anniversary of her birth, this multi-disciplinary concert will recall the day in 1955 when Rosa Parks courageously refused to give up her seat on the bus, and, through modern and historical music and dance, celebrate the African-American story.
