The week ahead: 'Bad Grandpa,' 'Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2' and more

Johnny Knoxville goes in disguise as a senior citizen in the comedy "Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa." Bill Hader and Anna Faris lead the voice cast of the animated film "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2." Julia Louis-Dreyfus and James Gandolfini are divorced parents whose romance has an awkward connection in the dramedy "Enough Said." Oscar winners Michael Douglas, Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman and Kevin Kline are longtime friends who reunite for a Las Vegas wedding in "Last Vegas." These are among the films that premiere on demand from Jan. 27 to Feb. 2, 2014. (Check with your cable or satellite provider for a lineup of on-demand channels on your system.)

Jan. 28, 2014: "Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa" -- unedited (Same day as DVD), Rated TV-MA.

"Jackass" star Johnny Knoxville disguises himself as a senior citizen who behaves badly while on a road trip with his "grandson" (played by Jackson Nicoll), as the camera captures unsuspecting people's reactions. "Bad Grandpa" is nominated for an Oscar for Best Makeup.

Jan. 28, 2014: "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2" (Same day as DVD), Rated PG.

In the animated comedy "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2,'" inventor Flint Lockwood (voiced by Bill Hader) thought he saved the world when he destroyed his most infamous invention: a machine that turned water into food causing cheeseburger rain and spaghetti tornadoes. But Flint soon learns that his invention survived and is now creating food-animals: "foodimals!" Flint and his friends embark on a dangerously delicious mission to battle hungry tacodiles, shrimpanzees, hippotatomuses, cheespiders and other foodimals to save the world again.

Jan. 28, 2014: "Enough Said" (Weeks before Netflix and Redbox releases), Rated PG-13.

A divorced and single parent, Eva (played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus) spends her days enjoying work as a masseuse but dreading her daughter's impending departure for college. She meets Albert (played by James Gandolfini), a sweet, funny and like-minded man also facing an empty nest. As their romance quickly blossoms, Eva befriends Marianne (played by Catherine Keener), her new massage client. Marianne is a beautiful poet who seems "almost perfect" except for one prominent quality: she rags on her ex-husband way too much. Suddenly, Eva finds herself doubting her own relationship with Albert as she learns the truth about Marianne's ex-husband.

Jan. 28, 2014: “Last Vegas” (Same day as DVD), Rated PG-13.

Four best friends (played by Michael Douglas, Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman and Kevin Kline) decide to escape retirement and throw the ultimate Las Vegas bachelor party for the last member of their group to get married. Also starring Mary Steenburgen, Romany Malco and Jerry Ferrara.

Jan. 28, 2014: "Rush" (Same day as DVD; weeks before Netflix release), Rated R.

Set against the sexy and glamorous golden age of Formula One racing in the 1970s, Rush portrays the exhilarating true story of two of the greatest rivals the world has ever witnessed — handsome English playboy James Hunt (played by Chris Hemsworth) and his methodical, brilliant opponent Niki Lauda (played by Daniel Brühl). Taking us into their personal lives on and off the track, Rush follows the two drivers as they push themselves to the breaking point of physical and psychological endurance, where there is no shortcut to victory and no margin for error. If you make one mistake, you die.

Jan. 28, 2014: "Afternoon Delight" (Weeks before DVD, Netflix and Redbox releases), Rated R.

"Afternoon Delight" is the story of Rachel (played by Kathryn Hahn), a stay-at-home mom who becomes obsessed with saving a stripper named McKenna (played by Juno Temple). It’s nine am. You’ve just dropped your kid off at school. Pick-up is at four. No one knows where you are, and no one needs you. So what now? Rachel is a quick-witted and lovable, yet tightly coiled, thirty-something steeped in the creative class of Los Angeles’ bohemian, affluent Silver Lake neighborhood. Everything looks just right — chic modernist home, successful husband (played by Josh Radnor), adorable child, hipster wardrobe. But when she visits a strip club to spice up her marriage and gets a private dance from McKenna, something cracks open. Rachel returns to the scene of the dance to get to know McKenna, and soon after, adopt her as a live-in nanny. This bold move unleashes unimagined and colorful waves of change into Rachel’s life, marriage and community.

Jan. 28, 2014: "Metallica: Through the Never" (Same day as DVD; available in 3-D), Rated R.

"Metallica Through The Never" is a 3-D feature film starring members of the iconic rock band and Dane DeHaan, who plays a young band crew member who is sent out on an urgent mission while the band is playing a rousing live set in front of a sold-out crowd and unexpectedly finds his world turned completely upside down. This movie was written and directed by Nimród Antal.

Jan. 28, 2014: "Dead Meat Walking"

Zombies walk among us in Dead Meat Walking, dog walker turned documentarian Omar J. Pineda’s spellbinding, visually horrific, and decadently delightful documentary that follows the growing international phenomenon known as the “zombie walk.” Pineda uncovers its origins — from the first “official” zombie walk (with a mere six participants), to walks attracting more than 15,000 undead zealots, made up to look their worst. Pineda’s film delves into the psyches of ordinary people who've decided that dressing, acting and making themselves up like zombies is not only an avocation, but is the ultimate tribute to the literature, films and the legends of the walking dead throughout history.

Jan. 28, 2014: "Last Woman Standing"

In 2012, the Olympic Games included women’s boxing for the first time in history. But, only three weight categories would be admitted: 51kg, 60kg and 75kg. To compete for their Olympic dream women boxers all over the world were forced to move up or down in weight. For two of the world’s best fighters, both from Canada, this meant the end of a friendship and the beginning of a fierce rivalry. Last Woman Standing follows world champion boxers and former friends, Ariane Fortin and Mary Spencer, as they fight for an Olympic dream that can only belong to one.

Jan. 28, 2014: “Marvin, Seth and Stanley”

This comedy joins the quarreling Greenstein brothers Seth (played by Alex Karpovsky) and Stanley (writer/director Stephen Gurewitz) when they reluctantly agree to join their father, Marvin (played by Marvin Gurewitz), for a weekend trip in rural Minnesota. Estranged from each other, the threesome of inept outdoorsmen rediscover repressed grudges as the weekend comically devolves into a series of daytime drinking episodes and botched outdoor pursuits.

Jan. 30, 2014: "Grand Piano" (Before theatrical release), Rated R.

Tom Selznick (played by Elijah Wood), the most talented pianist of his generation, has stopped performing in public because of his stage fright. Years after a catastrophic performance, he reappears in public for a long awaited concert in Chicago. In a packed theater, in front of an expectant audience, Tom finds a message written on the score: “Play one wrong note and you die.” In the sights of an anonymous sniper (played by John Cusack), Tom must get through the most difficult performance of his life and look for help without being detected

Jan. 31, 2014: “California Scheming” (Same day as theatrical release), Rated R.

The movie tells the story of three teens in Malibu who meet Chloe (played by Gia Mantegna), the beautiful new girl in town. Nick and Jason, two best friends and surf buddies from Malibu are drawn to Chloe's good looks and mystique, while Hillary (played by Rachel Seiferth), in town from Boston and staying with family in the wake of her mother's untimely death, is looking for friends and a place to fit in. Chloe introduces the three teens to the world of drugs and misdemeanor, but she may have more in store than she leads them to believe. Also starring Chad Lowe, Devon Werkheiser, Spencer Daniels and Claudia Christian.

Jan. 31, 2014: “Brightest Star” (Same day as theatrical release)

Fresh out of college, a young man (played by Chris Lowell) is left devastated when the girl of his dreams (played by Rose McIver) dumps him. Refusing to move on, he devises a plan to transform himself into the man she desires. After resigning himself to working for the head of a company in corporate mediocrity (played by Clark Gregg), he falls for a hipster songstress (played by Jessica Szohr) who likes him as he is. As his path continues to unfold unexpectedly, the counsel of a kindred spirit astronomer (played by Allison Janney) helps him understand how to truly carve out a place in the universe.

Jan. 31, 2014: “12 O'Clock Boys” (Same day as theatrical release)

The 12 O’Clock Boys are a notorious urban dirt bike pack in Baltimore — popping wheelies and weaving at excessive speeds through traffic, the group impressively evades the hamstrung police. In Lotfy Nathan’s wild, dynamic documentary (three years in the making), their stunning antics are envisioned through the eyes of young adolescent Pug — a bright kid from the Westside obsessed with the riders and willing to do anything to join their ranks. "12 O'Clock Boys" provides a compelling and intimate personal story of a young boy and his dangerous, thrilling dream.
