The week ahead:'300: Rise of an Empire,' 'Winter's Tale,' 'Rob the Mob' and more

Eva Green and Sullivan Stapleton headline the epic action sequel "300: Rise of an Empire." Colin Farrell, Jennifer Connelly and Russell Crowe are among the stars in the time-traveling romantic drama "Winter's Tale." Michael Pitt and Nina Arianda play a couple of bungling criminals in "Rob the Mob." Paul Rudd and Amy Poehler star in a satire of romantic comedies in "They Came Together." Those are among the movies that premiere on demand from June 23 to June 29, 2014. (Check with your cable or satellite provider for a lineup of on-demand channels on your system.)

June 24, 2014: “300: Rise of an Empire” (Same day as DVD; weeks before Netflix and Redbox releases), Rated R.

After its victory over Leonidas' 300, the Persian Army under the command of Xerxes marches south towards the major Greek city-states. The Democratic city of Athens, first on the path of Xerxes' army, bases its strength on its fleet, led by admiral Themistocles. Themistocles is forced to an unwilling alliance with the traditional rival of Athens, oligarchic Sparta whose might lies with its superior infantry troops. But Xerxes still reigns supreme in numbers over sea and land. Starring Sullivan Stapleton, Rodrigo Santoro, Eva Green and Jack O'Connell.

June 24, 2014: "Winter's Tale" (Same day as DVD; weeks before Netflix and Redbox releases), Rated PG-13.

Set in a mythic New York City and spanning more than a century, “Winter’s Tale” is about miracles, crossed destinies, and the age-old battle between good and evil. Peter Lake (played by Colin Farrell) is a master thief, who never expected to have his own heart stolen by the beautiful Beverly Penn (played by Jessica Brown Findlay). But their love is star-crossed: she burns with a deadly form of consumption, and Peter has been marked for a much more violent death by his one-time mentor, the demonic Pearly Soames (played by Russell Crow). Peter desperately tries to save his one true love, across time, against the forces of darkness, even as Pearly does everything in his power to take him down — winner take all and loser be damned. What Peter needs is a miracle, but only time and the help of a newspaper journalist (played by Jennifer Connelly) will tell if he can find one.

June 24, 2014: “Caucus”

For the past 40 years, the race for the American presidency has begun in the state of Iowa, where candidates spend months traveling the state's 99 counties hoping to win its “first-in-the-nation” vote and prove they are viable candidates. The documentary “Caucus” goes behind the scenes of the 2011-2012 campaign in Iowa as eight Republicans fight to become their party’s standard-bearer and take on Barack Obama. A never-before-seen look at an unforgettable political season, the film re-introduces viewers to the remarkable and unorthodox GOP field with special focus on former Senator Rick Santorum and the charismatic congresswoman and self-proclaimed Tea Party leader Michele Bachmann.

June 24, 2014: "Hungry"

How many hot dogs could you eat in 10 minutes? Follow the jaw-dropping exploits of several competitive eaters, including the world famous Takeru Kobayashi, known for his six consecutive wins at the Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog-Eating Contest in Coney Island. After a contract dispute with Major League Eating, the organization that holds a veritable monopoly on the sport, Kobayashi is banned from their events, but fights back to restore his tarnished reputation.

June 24, 2014: "Rob the Mob" (Same day as DVD), Rated R.

Fresh from prison for a small-time crime, reunited lovers Thomas (played by Michael Pitt) and Rosie (played by Nina Arianda) find themselves in need of cash. After hearing testimony from John Gotti’s high profile trial that mob social clubs are gun-free, Thomas and Rosie brazenly rob these underground spots operated by major crime families in the City. Unwittingly, they come across something much more valuable than money: a list of every mobster in the families. Now the feds, family members, and rival mobsters are on the hunt for the most notorious lovers since Romeo & Juliet.

Best friends Lily (played by Dakota Fanning) and Gerry (played by Elizabeth Olsen), home for one last New York summer, make a pact to lose their virginity before leaving for college. But when they both fall for the same handsome artist (played by Boyd Holbrook) and Lily starts seeing him in secret, a lifelong friendship is tested. Also starring Demi Moore, Richard Dreyfuss, Ellen Barkin, Peter Sarsgaard, and Clark Gregg.

June 26, 2014: "Happy Christmas" (Before theatrical release), Rated R.

When Jenny (played by Anna Kendrick), a hard partying 20-something moves in with Kelly (played by Melanie Lynskey), a budding novelist, her film director husband (played by Joe Swanberg) and their 2-year-old son after a break up, the family’s idyllic life is shaken. Jenny begins a rocky relationship with their babysitter-cum-pot dealer (played by Mark Webber), and she and a friend named Carson (played by Lena Dunham) bring Kelly to the realization that an evolution in her life, career and relationship is necessary for her happiness.

June 26, 2014: "Cabin Fever: Patient Zero" (Before theatrical release)

A group of friends planned the perfect vacation in the Caribbean, but when they head ashore to explore a remote island, their ultimate bachelor weekend devolves into their worst nightmare. After an ill-fated swim in contaminated water, they stumble upon a seemingly abandoned research facility where a deadly, flesh-eating virus has been unleashed. Starring Ryan Donowho, Brando Eaton, Jillian Murray, Mitch Ryan, Lydia Hearst, Currie Graham and Sean Astin.

June 27, 2014: “The Internet's Own Boy: The Story of Aaron Swartz” (Same day as theatrical release)

This documentary is the story of programming prodigy and information activist Aaron Swartz. From Swartz's help in the development of the basic internet protocol RSS to his co-founding of Reddit, his fingerprints are all over the internet. But it was Swartz's groundbreaking work in social justice and political organizing combined with his aggressive approach to information access that ensnared him in a two year legal nightmare. It was a battle that ended with the taking of his own life at the age of 26.

June 27, 2014: “Whitey: United States of America v. James J. Bulger” (Same day as theatrical release)

“Whitey: United States of America v. James J. Bulger” is a sweeping and revelatory documentary film that follows the trial of the infamous gangster James “Whitey” Bulger, using the courtroom action as a springboard to examine accusations of multi-faceted corruption within our nation’s law enforcement and legal systems. Throughout this violent and sordid story, “Whitey: United States of America v. James J. Bulger” returns to the central question of the nature of Whitey?s relationship with law enforcement, a complex exploration of a multi-faceted story. Was Bulger an informant, as everyone believes, or, as Bulger?s lawyers claim, is there actual proof that this claim is yet more misinformation and obfuscation by the government in an attempt to protect itself and preserve its convictions?

June 27, 2014: “Drones”

Two soldiers are tasked with deciding the fate of a terrorist with a single push of a button. As the action plays out in real time, their window to use a deadly military drone on the target slowly closes. With time running out, the soldiers begin to question what the real motives are behind the ordered lethal attack. Starring Eloise Mumford and Matt O’Leary.

June 27, 2014: “Bound By the Flesh” (Same day as theatrical release)

American sideshows were in fairs, circuses and carnivals. Most freaks just stood there while the audience wandered past. The conjoined twins Daisy and Violet Hilton, however, were trained to put on a winning performance. They sang, they danced and played a variety of musical instruments. Once they quit the carnival world and started playing vaudeville houses they made tens of thousands of dollars, setting box office records. They were soon considered “the royalty of vaudeville,” but the exploited twins would see little of their fortunes after the money was pocketed by unscrupulous managers. “Bound By the Flesh” explores the American sideshow, its origins and its heyday when the Hilton sisters were on display for huge streams of crowds pouring into tents to get a glimpse of these gorgeous multi-talented sisters.

June 27, 2014: “Radio Free Albemuth” (Same day as theatrical release), Rated TV-PG.

Radio Free Albemuth is an indie film based on the novel by Philip K. Dick of the same title. Radio Free Albemuth is Dick's most autobiographical novel, and the author wrote himself in as the novel's main character in the novel (played by Shea Whigham in the movie). Also starring Jonathan Scarfe, Alanis Morissette, Katheryn Winnick, Jon Tenney and Ashley Greene.

June 27, 2014: “They Came Together” (Same day as theatrical release), Rated R.

When Joel (played by Paul Rudd) and Molly (played by Amy Poehler) meet, it’s hate at first sight: his big Corporate Candy Company threatens to shut down her quirky indie candy shop. Plus, Joel is hung up on his sexy ex (played by Cobie Smulders). But amazingly, they fall in love, until they break up about two thirds of the way through, and Molly starts dating her accountant (played by Ed Helms). But then right at the end…well you’ll just have to see. (Hint: Joel makes a big speech and they get back together.) "They Came Togethr" (from David Wain, the director of "Wet Hot American Summer," "Wanderlust" and "Role Models") is a hilarious and irreverent subversion of the romantic comedy genre.
