Just a week before its television premiere on the Hallmark Channel moviegoers in the Magic City were treated to a free screening of “The Watsons Go to Birmingham” Thursday Sept. 12 at the Alabama Theatre. The special advance screening of the movie was held in conjunction with events commemorating the 50th anniversary of the 1963 March on Washington.
The film stars Anika Nona Rose (“Dreamgirls”) and Wood Harris (“The Wire”) as a Michigan couple who take their three kids on a road trip down south in 1963 to bond with extended family. Upon their arrival they come face to face with some harsh social realities quite different from their own.
Tonya Lewis Lee serves as an executive producer for the television movie which is adapted from the children's novel of the same name. Her husband Spike’s Oscar-nominated documentary “4 Little Girls” will also screen at the Alabama Theatre on Sunday, Sept. 15 with doors scheduled to open around 11:00 a.m.
“The Watsons Go to Birmingham” premieres Friday, Sept. 20 at 8 p.m. ET on the Hallmark Channel.
