On the season premiere, Patrick started feeling sick during story time. He stumbled down towards the showers, become weaker and weaker. Once he got the shower running and was underneath the water, he collapsed. The camera zoomed in on his bloody face and then he opened his eyes, but he had turned. But what caused him to die and turn into a walker? Viewers didn't see him get scratched or bit, so there is some confusion.
Joe Lopez of Kerrville, Texas believes that it was the water from the vegetables. He explains that in the first season, Shane told Carl that he would teach him how to purify the water. Although viewers never saw the group purify any water, he believes that at the prison they have been purifying their drinking, cooking and shower water, that Rick most likely never purified the water he was pouring on the crops. He says that unpurified water on the crops would lead to the vegetables being toxic.
Another theory also has to do with the vegetables. Jennifer, who asked that her last name not be published, believes that the vegetables are not edible because of the soil. She said,
"They have been killing walkers all over the prison grounds. Their blood splattered everywhere, then they go and plant crops? Some of that infected blood probably seeped into the soil and contaminated it. When they planted those seeds, that infection went from the soil, to the seed, to the crop and to Patrick. Eventually, all who ate the vegetables are at risk of dying, just like he did."
There is also the possibility that Patrick became sick from eating an animal. In the middle of the episode, Patrick thanks Daryl for the deer. Could he have gotten sick from bad meat or are the animals becoming infected? How many other prison residents ate the deer?
What do you think caused Patrick's death in "The Walking Dead" season 4 premiere? Do you think it had to do with the water, soil or deer meat? What other theories can you think of?
