“The Walking Dead” Season 4, episode 4 “Indifference,” debuted on AMC on Sunday, November 3. In the previous episode, “Isolation,” Daryl, Michonne, Bob, and Tyreese made it out safely from the giant herd of walkers. Meanwhile, Rick discovered who was behind the murders of Karen and David. Note that spoilers are ahead if you missed episode 4 “Indifference” or are not caught up to “The Walking Dead.”
“Indifference” kicks off with Rick bandaging his sprained hand and prepping the car for a run that he’ll be taking with Carol. In the meantime, Carol has a talk with Lizzie and gives her a knife for protection. Lizzie accidentally calls Carol “mom,” to which Carol quickly responds, “Don’t call me mom.”
The next scene features Daryl, Tyreese, Michonne, and Bob. Tyreese seems to be giving everyone a hard time with his attitude. They try to cut a path through a fence that has been covered in branches, but Tyreese goes overboard and he unleashes several walkers. One of the walkers gets a hold of Tyreese, he can easily let him go but Tyreese holds on and is saved by Daryl and Bob. Michonne looks at him suspiciously and asks, “Why didn’t you let go?” Tyreese just looks away with a distraught look on his face.
Now out on their run, Rick and Carol are in the car. Carol tells Rick that she knows he chose her to come because he doesn’t trust her back at the prison. Rick doesn’t respond so Carol continues to explain that they [Karen and David] were suffering and she made it [their death] quick. She goes on to say that she tried to stop it from spreading.
After killing a walker in a house Rick and Carol entered, a door slowly opens and two survivors exit. They are frightened and have their hands up to show Rick and Carol that they mean no harm. The unknown survivors also offer Rick and Carol fruit.
Sam and Ana are the names of the survivors in the home. Carol heals Sam’s wounds, as they share with her and Rick a little about their lives. Rick then begins to ask them the three questions, beginning with “How many walkers have you killed?” The scene cuts to Daryl’s group so their answers are unknown.
Michonne has a talk with Tyreese; she tells him that even though she understands he is angry, anger makes one stupid. Tyreese responds with questions about the Governor, telling her that she’s angry about that. She says if he was here she would cut him in two, but he’s not so she isn’t angry. This shows a lot of character development for Michonne, who was full of anger and distrust when we first met her.
“Did we pass the test?,” Sam asks as the scene returns to Rick and Carol. Rick tells them about the prison and tells them to sit tight and someone will be back to pick them up. They insist they want to help though, and after some convincing, Rick gives them each a gun and a watch and says they’ll be back in two hours.
Michonne isn't the only that shows character development. She talks to Rick, explaining and justifying her reasons for killing Karen and David. Carol also talks about how she used to be so weak with her husband and all that she would put up with. Rick shares some memories about Lori with Carol, like how Lori would make terrible pancakes but they enjoyed breakfast together. They soon return for Sam and Ana, only to find Ana's leg by the yard door and two walkers eating her body.
They sit in the empty home waiting for Sam. Carol wants to leave and not wait anymore, but Rick has hope that he might return. The new tough Carol tells Rick that even if Sam is fine, they need to leave because they can't wait any longer.
Back with Daryl's group. They managed to fetch supplies, but are having a hard time trying to leave the building. Bob is on the roof with walkers pulling on his bag. He could let go and escape but holds on. Daryl and the others save him and Daryl opens the bag to see what was inside, he find a bottle of alcohol. Angry, Daryl is about to throw it but Bob says "don't" and reaches for his gun. Daryl gets in Bob's face and threatens him, taking his gun from him and throwing the bottle at him.
As they head back to the car, Rick tells Carol that Karen and David could have lived - but now they'll never know. Rick says that once Tyreese find out he'll kill her, and the others won't want her there. "Rick, it's me," Carol says, tearing up. Rick replies that she is no longer the scared woman she used to be, and that she'll be find on her own. He gives her a car that they found outside the home, packed with everything she will need for a while. And they drive off their separate ways. I really hope this isn't the last we see of Carol!
