After kicking off Season 4 last Sunday, "The Walking Dead" returned with an all-new episode. On Sunday, October 20, AMC debuted "The Walking Dead" Season 4, episode 2 "Infected." Fans learned more about the new threat, as the episode picks up where it left off. Note that spoilers are ahead if you missed the episode "Infected," or are not caught up with the series.
The episode starts with an unseen person feeding the walkers by the gate. Only the flashlight he or she is holding can be seen as they hold a rat while a walker eats it. The scene changes to the in-love couple Tyreese and Karen, they share a moment before going their separate ways. Karen is now walking down the hallway by herself with a flashlight. She arrives to the bathroom to splash some water on her face but stops when she hears something. As she searches around, walker Patrick is seen getting up from the floor. Karen returns to her cell block and goes to bed, but is followed by Patrick. Patrick skips her cell and moves on to the next one, successfully biting and killing a man sleeping there.
It's morning now, and walker Patrick is still working on devouring his first victim. He is distracted by a noise and leaves, as the man he bit follows - now a walker himself.
Rick and Carl are heading to the crops for more farming, they say bye to Michonne who is leaving on another run. Carl suggest to his dad that they should help kill some of the walkers crowding up at the gate. Rick tells him he has other plans, like the farm. Carl asks his dad about getting his gun back, Rick just smiles and they are then interrupted by what sounds like gun shots coming from inside the prison. The noise is loud enough for even Michonne to come back.
Tyreese, Sasha, Daryl, Glenn and Maggie, come out of the prison and head over to where the noise is coming from. Michonne is in danger, but Carl saves her just in time using a gun. She is hurt and helped by Maggie.
Inside the prison, there are several walkers now and are attacking the survivors in cell block D. Carol is about to cut off a man's arm that has been bitten to save him, but then notices he was also bitten on his neck and there's no hope for him. The original prison gang help save as many survivors as they can. The aftermath is pretty bad, at least 10 members of the prison are killed off - no major character deaths.
The gang begin to notice that several of the walkers died without being bitten. Rick points out that the blood on their eyes look just like the eyes of a walker he saw by the fence. Hershel, Rick, Daryl, and two others conclude that this must be a serious virus.
Rick comes out of the prison. Carl runs to him, happy to see his dad alive. Rick tells Maggie and Michonne what happened and warns them to stay away from anyone who was exposed in the area.
The council holds a meeting. Hershel suggests that they move everyone from cell block D to A. They hear Karen coughing outside the room with Tyreese. Carol and Hershel tell them that she shouldn't go back with Tyreese, saying that Judith might be vulnerable - as well as everyone else in other cells.
Daryl is outside working on digging up the graves for their fallen friends. Rick shows up to help. Maggie calls them over before Rick can start though, as part of the fence is falling apart by a huge herd of walkers trying to get through.
Beth is helping bandage up Michonne's hurt ankle, Judith is in the room playing with some plastic cups. Michonne is annoyed when Judith begins to cry.
The scene switches back to Rick, Daryl, Sasha, Maggie, Glenn, and Tyreese trying to control the fence. Sasha notices rats on the ground, "Has someone been feeding these things?" There is no time to speculate though as the fence is falling down. They step back, knowing they can't stop it now. Rick then instructs Daryl to get the truck.
Inside the prison, Carl is working on making the crosses for the grave. Carol walks in to ask if he has told his dad about her teaching the children to use knives and protect themselves. Carl says he doesn't want to lie to his dad, but Carol says that not telling on her isn't lying.
Michonne is working out in her cell when Beth asks her to hold Judith while she cleans up. Michonne tells her no, but then accepts. She holds Judith awkwardly, but then pulls her closer and begins to cry. Could Michonne have lost a child before?
Daryl returns with the truck, Rick has the pigs packed up and uses them as bait. Rick makes a deep cut on the pigs and releases them for the walkers to follow, he does this until they are far enough from the prison. Fans can tell this is hard for Rick to do.
Carl tells Rick that Carol has been teaching the children how to use weapons. Carl also asks if the pigs are what made the people sick, but Rick isn't sure and even comments that they themselves possibly made the pigs sick. Rick thanks Carl for telling him about Carol. Rick then hands Carl his gun back. He goes on to strap on his belt and places his own gun there. It looks like Rick's farm days are over.
Tyreese goes on to visit Karen, but is shocked to find a trail of blood. He follows it outside, where he finds two burnt bodies - one belongs to Karen.
