The newest episode of “The Walking Dead” (originally airing Sunday, October 20, 2013) starts off with an unknown figure holding a flashlight at the fences feeding a rat to a zombie. Inside Tyreese (Chad L. Coleman) and Karen (Melissa Ponzio) kiss and cuddle while talking about all the friends they have lost. Tyreese is feeling so good he even breaks into song as they laugh and smile. They talk and decide it isn’t time for them to start having sex so they go their separate ways back to their bunks. Karen goes to the bathroom to wash her face and hears a noise. She looks around with her flashlight, but doesn’t see anything. As she leaves Patrick, now a zombie, sits up in the shadows. He stands and follows Karen back to the block where the newcomers’ rooms are. He passes Karen’s room, but walks in on a man who is asleep and bites this throat out.
In the morning, as Patrick feasts on his victim, Rick (Andrew Lincoln) is up holding the baby. An alarm goes off and he wakes Carl (Chandler Riggs). Meanwhile, in another block Patrick’s victim is now a zombie. He stands and the two of them leave the cell.
In the tower, Glenn (Steven Yeun) and Maggie (Lauren Cohan) are on watch. She is asleep. Glenn grabs his camera and snaps a photo of her which wakes her up. He gives her a kiss and tells her that he will bring her breakfast. Carl and Rick are walking out to the gardens when they come across Michonne (Danai Gurira) leading her horse. She is going out on another run and asks if they want anything specific. She asks Carl why he doesn’t wear his hat anymore (it has been absent so far this season) and with a smile he tells her that it is not a farming hat. The transformation of Carl from cold blooded killer back to normal kid is still continuing. As they work Carl mentions them needing more people to kill zombies at the fence and asks if he can help. Rick tells him they will be working the gardens. Carl then tells him he is sorry for asking and tells him that he is trying. Rick knows. Carl asks him when he can have his gun back. Just as Rick is about to answer explosions go off and people come running out of the prison.
Michonne hears the noise, turns around and comes back. As she comes through the gate she is attacked by two zombies. They knock her to the ground and are on top of her. Carl picks up a rifle and shoots one with a slight glimmer in his eye. Maggie rushes down from the tower and helps with the other. Michonne is hurt in the action.
Inside the prison all hell has broken loose. People are running everywhere. There are zombies attacking from all sides. Glen, Rick and Daryl (Norman Reedus) fight and kill them then work their way through the cells making sure they are all clear. As they do Carol (Melissa McBride) pulls a guy (Ray) into a cell that has been bit in the arm. She puts a belt around his arm and tells him that she has to cut off his arm to save his life. As she draws her knife she sees he has also been bitten on the neck. Glenn gets attacked by a zombie and Daryl shoots it through the head with his crossbow. They see it was Patrick. Rick finds a dead person that has not yet turned and knows what he has to do. He draws his knife and with a defeated looked finishes them before they can turn.
Back at the cell, Carol is talking to Ray. He makes her promise to look after his loved ones. Rick, Daryl, Hershel (Scott Wilson) and others are looking at dead zombie’s body that has no bite wounds. They realize there is some virus now that is capable of killing people and they are worried.
In the cell, Carol bring Ray’s two daughters to see him. They say their tearful goodbyes. As Carol is about to kill him the oldest says it should be her that does it. She takes Carol’s knife, but she can’t do it. As the girls huddle and cry Carol stabs Ray in ear and kills him.
Outside, Rick finds Maggie, Michonne and Carl. He tells them about Patrick and that he is worried about the people inside being exposed to the virus. Inside the group is talking about the sickness and they are trying to figure out how it spreads. Karen and Tyreese walk by. She is coughing. They tell them that they want to quarantine those who might be sick.
Carol finds Ray’s daughters outside and talks to them. They are out by the fence. Carol tells the oldest daughter Lizzie that she is weak for not being able to kill her dad and she has to get stronger if she wants to survive. Lizzie sees the zombie she named Nick dead and gets upset about that. She seems more upset about that than losing her dad. Lizzie runs off and the younger girl looks at Carol and tells her that Lizzie is messed up, not weak.
A little later, Daryl is burying the dead. Rick walks up and apologizes. He says he wasn’t much help inside without his gun. Daryl tells him he was a big help and that he has earned this time he has taken off from being the leader. As they talk Maggie screams for help. Across the yard a group of zombies have amassed and they are pushing on the fence which is starting to give way. They race over and with a slight hesitation Rick goes to work stabbing and killing zombies through the fence.
Inside Michonne is getting her ankle wrapped by Beth (Emily Kinney). Michonne is angry at how she did in the fight and says she was stupid. Michonne says that they should have left her, but Beth lets her know that people care about her. When Michonne says that they could have gotten hurt helping her Beth says, “When you care about people getting hurt is part of the package.” Beth is also watching the baby who starts to cry and it seems to have a profound effect on Michonne.
Out at the fence the group is fighting. Sasha (Sonequa Martin-Green) sees a bunch of dead rats. Someone has been feeding the zombies. The fence is badly bending and about to collapse. Rick announces that he knows what to do and tells Daryl to get the truck.
Back in the prison, Carl is building a cross for Patrick’s grave. Carol comes in and asks him if he told his dad about seeing her in the library teaching the kids about knives. Carl tells her he didn’t. Carol tells him that she has to teach the kids how to take care of themselves. She is unsure if people will understand what she is doing so she asks Carl not to tell anyone. Across the prison, Michonne is doing exercises while Beth sings to the baby. The baby throws up on Beth who hands her off to Michonne while she grabs a towel. At first Michonne won’t take her, but then she does. She holds the baby close and starts to cry. We are starting to learn more about who mysterious Michonne is.
Daryl now has the Jeep. He is towing a trailer that has Rick and a large box on it. They pull out of the prison and park in a field. The zombies turn and head toward them. From a box Rick pulls a piglet. He cuts it so it is bleeding and puts it down. The zombies attack it. They pull a little further away and he does it again. Slowly, they lead the zombie heard from the prison fences. Rick is clearly conflicted about what he is doing.
Carol meets Ray’s daughters out at the fences again. She tells Lizzie that she shouldn’t feel bad about walkers dying. Carol takes her knife and cuts a flower that she puts in Lizzie’s hair. As they stand their Lizzie reaches over and takes Carol’s knife then sheathes it in her own belt.
Meanwhile, Rick is tearing down the pig pen. When Carl comes out Rick tells him he thinks they made the pigs sick. Carl tells Rick about Carol teaching the kids how to kill. Carl says he thinks Rick should let her. He also says that he knows his dad will say it isn’t up to him, but it can be. Rick thanks him for telling him then tells Carl that he won’t stop her or say anything as he lights the remains of the pig pen on fire. He then walks over to a box, pulls out a handgun and hands it to Carl before pulling out his own gun belt and strapping on his gun. Rick takes off his bloody shirt and throws it in the fire. He looks out and sees zombies collecting at the fence again and the look on his face explains that the reality of their world is starting to set back in.
Tyreese goes to visit Karen with a bundle of flowers in hand. He finds her cell empty and blood trail on the floor leading away from it. He follows the blood trail outside where he finds Karen and another person dead. Their bodies have been burned. There is a gas can sitting next to the bodies, but nobody in sight. This tense episode of “The Walking Dead” comes to an end with Tyreese on his knees screaming in pain and anger.
