On "The Walking Dead" season 4, episode 3, Hershel (Scott Wilson) tended to the sick patients by serving them herbal tea. In the beginning he did have a covering over his mouth to decrease the chances of him getting sick. However, by the end of the episode, he ended up taking it off. On Nov. 1, Wet Paint brought up this fact and viewers are now wondering if Hershel is just confident that the group will be back with medication or if he has a death wish.

There are some possible theories as to why Hershel took off his mouth covering. The first theory is that he is confidence that Daryl, Michonne, Tyreese and Bob will be back soon with the medication that they need. He didn't seem to worried when he took it off.
Another reason is that he may not care if he survives or not. He has made it a long time despite his age and his amputated leg. Most fathers stay alive for their children, but now that Maggie is with Glenn and Beth is growing up caring for baby Judith, he might think that his job is done. Also, he has an amputated leg and even though he has a prosthetic, he still can't walk perfectly and would certainly have difficulty running. He might know that he could end up being a liability to the group rather than an asset.
Of course, the reason that Hershel took off his face covering could be much more simple: perhaps he just wasn't thinking until after it was done.
Why do you think that Hershel took off his face covering in "The Walking Dead" season 4, episode 3? Do you think he has a death wish or do you have another theory?
