The Walking Dead” is back on AMC and ready to toy with fan’s minds. Episode nine, “The Suicide King,” concluded with on a highly surprising note, leaving fans puzzled. On Monday, Feb. 11, former showrunner Glen Mazzara explained to Entertainment Weekly the meaning behind this cliffhanger.

Note that spoilers are ahead if you missed episode nine, “The Suicide King,” or are not up-to-date with “The Walking Dead.”

At the end of “The Suicide King,” Rick was about to let Tyrese and his group stay, but was interrupted by yet another hallucination – a silhouette of Lori in her wedding dress.

Former showrunner Glen Mazzara tells Entertainment Weekly that this delusion is a lot different than the others. “That is a vision of Lori haunting Rick, and she’s appearing to him in what was her wedding dress, on the day he was happiest with her,” Mazzara tells EW. “And if you look at that moment — and this is important — if you look at that moment when he sees her, it’s right when he’s about to let Tyrese and his group join the group and stay in the prison. And his sanity cracks and his subconscious shows him this vision, which is a classic horror moment. And it’s at exactly the wrong time, and it ruins something for that group.”

Fans are wondering if Rick’s sanity slipping could mean that his days as the leader, and possibly, human, are numbered. All hope is not lost though, Mazzara tells EW that Hershel might be able to help Rick snap out of it. “Hershel, who is very astute and a good friend of Rick’s, has a lot of insights into that Rick-Lori relationship. This will be an arc for him,” Mazzara says. “Hershel spent the back half of the first part of the season recovering from his injury. Hershel is now back and he’s ready to kick ass with his one good leg. He really needs to save his friend.”

Entertainment Weekly also asked what this could mean for the group. After all, Rick is the leader and they all depend on him. “That is the story. That’s exactly the story,” Mazzara says. “What becomes of this group if Rick is at his most fragile point? He’s cracking under the pressure. That is the story of the back half of the season.”
