“The Walking Dead” starts their new season right where they left off, with a new clan of people from the Governor’s not so lovely town, Woodbury. These folks jump ship and get on a bus to the prison where they join Rick and the group. With new folks in the mix, this allows new “Walking Dead” relationships to bloom in a world where you watch the dead fester and then get up and walk the earth once again.
According to Variety on Sept. 30, the “most compelling portion” of the two hours in the October premiere is the notion that “death has become such an ever-present part of their lives.” Watching a child, Carl, grow up in this new world shows how the warmth of childhood is replaced with a coldness, which is necessary to survive in a world where walkers are around every corner.
Death being so prevalent among this group has the act of grieving becoming a thing of the past. During the premiere, Michonne is on horseback searching for the Governor. When she finds him, this is bound to be a scene not soon forgotten.
Unlike other series on TV today, except for “Breaking Bad,” you know enough not to become too attached to any of the main characters because no one is safe from being bitten or eaten by a walker or shot by a human who wants their supplies.
This new primitive life opens up for an action scene in the premiere, where the prison dwellers, both old and new, form a group to go out on a scavenger hunt for supplies. Fueled by the fear of becoming zombie food, the “Walking Dead” group sets out carefully, but their anxieties about zombies soon become real-life once again.
The prison group has to go out more often and further away for supplies, with the many more mouths to feed. The season will have plenty extras now to kill off, after the governor’s clan added fresh new faces. Chances are the viewers will get to know them a little bit first to make their demise more meaningful.
“The Walking Dead” premieres at 9 p.m. ET Sunday, October 13 on AMC. All week long leading up to the premiere, AMC will run previous “The Walking Dead” episodes.
