On Thursday, March 27 Wetpaint Entertainment posted spoilers for the upcoming fifth season of the AMC television drama "The Walking Dead," which will begin filming this summer for a late 2014 release. The sixteen episode season was renewed late last year before the midseason four finale, and the series is expected to continue for at least seven seasons.
The season four finale, "A," will air on Sunday, March 30 and will leave fans with a major cliffhanger which would be resolved until season five. The cliffhanger could involve a major character death since executive producer and comic book series creator Robert Kirkman revealed that "no one is safe" on the series from death. He mentioned there is "quite a big shock coming" and fans will be eager for the start of season five.
Filming for season five will begin in the middle of April, similar to previous seasons that have resumed filming outside Atlanta at the beginning of May. Cast and crew members are expected to arrive on April 23 to begin filming the first episode. According to signs posted near the filming areas, there will be simulated gunfire, so the conflict won't be over in the season finale. The first episode of season five will be filmed at a train depot, which is the filming location for Terminus, the sanctuary that has been teased throughout the current season.
Filming one episode takes eight days of shooting, although the premiere and finale episodes make even longer. Previous season have begun filming in the first week of May and completed filming in the middle of November. The new season usually premieres in the middle of October and runs through the end of March or beginning of April.
Executive producers have previously revealed that Beth Greene (Emily Kinney) will not have her story resolved quickly, so that should be explained more in season five. Several new characters were introduced in season four, including Abraham Ford, Eugene Porter, Rosita Espinosa and Gareth. Rosita, Abraham and Eugene are expected to be series regulars for season five, and it's possible Gareth will be as well, since producers have given the character the option after having a small but important role in the season four finale. The character of Tara has an option for season five.
