Fans of "The Walking Dead" have been speculating on what the deal is with Terminus and will probably continue to do so until season 5 airs later this year. While the cannibal theory is popular, some fans are coming up with other possibilities, like it just being a game. On April 5, ComicBook.com revealed why some viewers are questioning the cannibal theory and what they think will happen on "The Walking Dead" season 5 instead.
Warning: If you do not want to know "The Walking Dead" season 5 spoilers or fan speculation, then stop reading.
Scott Gimple recently said that fans shouldn't assume that there are cannibals at Terminus. Even though that seems to be the most obvious conclusion, the showrunner probably has a few surprises up his sleeve. It is true that no body parts were visible on Mary's grill and nobody was seen being eaten, but there seems to be so much other evidence. However, Gimple said,
“As far as the bones go, that doesn’t necessarily mean that they ate those people – but it definitely doesn’t seem like anything good happened, either. We’re going to learn more about Gareth and Terminus [early next season], with answers that will come fast and furious.”
He added about Mary's grill,
“They have a grill, but it might have simply been a parallel to the fact that [a barbecue] was the meeting place of everybody in the prison community.”
This definitely opens up the door to other possibilities. MJ Lopez, a loyal fan in Texas thinks that Gareth and the Terminus residents are playing some sort of game or testing the survivors. She thought about the Hunger Games and the things the contestants had to go through. Now that Gimple has made viewers question the cannibal theory, she may be on to something.
To make MJ's theory even more likely is a deleted scene photograph that was posted on The Walking Dead Forums. It shows Rick, Carl, Michonne and Daryl in a room that resembles a dungeon. They are face to face with some walkers, who are restrained with chains, but have their limbs free. Michonne doesn't have her katana, but is instead holding something else to use as a weapon. It's hard to tell what it is, but it seems to resemble a plastic pipe.
The theory along with the deleted scene photo seem to suggest that Gareth and the "Termites" are keeping all those people in boxcars not for food, but for some sort of game, test or maybe they want to find the strongest warriors to create an army.
Of course, Scott Gimple could just be trying to confuse fans. He didn't say there were not cannibals at Terminus, he just said that viewers shouldn't assume that there are because of the bones.
What do you think is going on at Terminus? Do you believe Gareth and his group are cannibals or is the theory that they are playing some sort of game more accurate?
"The Walking Dead" season 5 will air in October 2014.
