The day fans have been anticipating for months finally arrived last night, “The Walking Dead” premiered Season 4. The debut finished off by leaving viewers with a taste of a new threat within the walls of the prison. On Monday, October 14, The Hollywood Reporter along with AMC YouTube released sneak peeks and spoilers for the upcoming episode “Infected.”
First, here’s the scoop that most fans already know:
The official synopsis for “The Walking Dead” Season 4, episode 2 “Infected,” is: As the group faces a new enemy, Rick and the others fight to protect what they worked so hard for. We already know that the new enemy is a virus, but not sure what kind – food, airborne, water supply, or if walker’s are affecting people. From the short synopsis, one can conclude that this thing has spread to more than Patrick, and they’ve got a big problem on their hands now. Now for the spoiler snippets:
After the events from the previous season, fans are introduced to the new life at the prison in episode one “30 Days Without an Accident.” Everything seemed to be going as good as things can possibly be amidst a walker infested world, that is until a virus broke out. THR spoke with new showrunner Scott Gimple, and he revealed a bit about where this virus is coming from.
When Patrick’s walker-turning body was shown, he was bleeding from his eyes, just as a walker by the fence was – could the virus be affecting more than the people at the prison? Gimple replies, “It is safe to say Patrick died of whatever that was. The walker that was at the fence that we saw was rather fresh; he’s not very rotted. I would intuit that because it’s a fresh zombie, that the person who died recently was by the same method Patrick died.”
Gimple was asked if this new virus is transferred via blood, and he replied, “…if someone is sick with any sort of communicable disease, any bodily fluid is bad news. But there were also a couple of dead pigs in this episode, which also might have something to do with it.”
Scott Gimple’s statements lead many to believe that the virus could be airborne and getting to the animals first. Not just the animals at the farm, but the one’s outside of the gates too. This would explain the eye-bleeding walker outside of the fence, Patrick, and Violet the pig – which there was a lot of focus on.
From the “Infected” sneak peek on AMC’s YouTube, it looks like Patrick’s body was found. Judging by the amount of fires shot, Patrick could have already taken the lives of a couple of people at the prison, causing the survivors to panic. In the preview, Carl asks his dad when he can have his gun back. Rick only grins and doesn’t reply. They are then interrupted by what sound like two shots. Rick tells Carl to go up to the tower with Maggie, as he runs towards to prison to find out what is going on. Two kids are running out of the prison yelling for help, Carol runs to them. Michonne also heard the commotion and is racing back to the gates in her horse.
In a second sneak peek, which you can watch here, an unseen person with a flashlight is seen feeding walkers through the fence. He or she appears to want to rile them up so they can break through the gates. Who is this traitor among the group of survivors? Can’t wait to find out!
