The Volvo XC90’s extra large touchscreen has wow factor

Swedish automaker Volvo has just unveiled its next-generation bigger and better, tablet-sized, user-interface for its XC90 SUV.

A smidge reminiscent of the Tesla Model S's gigantic in-dash 17-inch screen infotainment system that is touted to be intuitive as all heck, the latest and greatest from Volvo is smaller but reportedly, impactful nonetheless. Volvo's fits-all-fingers central touchscreen will control most interior functions and should make users feel, as if they are navigating on an iPad that is a much easier feat, than the across-the-board small screens offered by most automakers.

According to Thomas Ingenlath, senior vice president of design at the Volvo Car Group, "The basic idea is to organize controls and information in a perfectly intuitive and user-friendly way. Everything is exactly where you expect it to be, making the drive more enjoyable, efficient, and safe,” he said in a press release.

Bigger is oftentimes better especially for motorists, who oftentimes, don't like squinting to read graphics on a user-interface, or fumbling with knobs/buttons that are way too difficult to operate. Fussy user-interface systems tend to make drivers lose focus and Volvo's touchscreen will reportedly, utilize easy routine gestures like swiping, tapping and pinching. The portrait screen's design is similar to a stack of flexible ‘tiles,' each displaying a key functionality. Navigation is on the top, followed by media and telephone.

The premium touchscreen system is expected to make its splash in the next-generation XC90 later this year.
