Tonight, May 5, Carson Daly introduced “The Voice” coaches, including the newly platinum blonde Adam Levine. Carson asked him for an explanation, and Adam said he didn’t have one – he had the day off and thought he would look like Shakira. He added that his mom hated it, but he liked it because it was different. Blake Shelton chimed in and said he thought Meg Ryan was sitting in with them tonight. Blake also joked, “Come on, Miley,” referring to Miley Cyrus.
Sisaundra Lewis kicked off the performances with “River Deep, Mountain High.” Usher said Sisaundra has been an incredible singer every time, and the performance this time was not too much. Shakira thought Sisaundra was a professional singer already. Adam loved the song choice and added that she was amazing. Blake said he was absolutely thrilled and that Sisaundra had chosen that song for herself.
Josh Kaufman took on “I Can’t Make You Love Me.” Shakira felt Josh is an artist with good taste – she finds him interesting and intuitive. Adam enjoyed seeing Josh’s success and was happy to see how far he had come. Blake thought it was as perfect a performance he had seen on the show. Usher said Josh did amazing and possessed the confidence a real artist has.
Blake Shelton performed his new single, “My Eyes,” with Gwen Sebastian. Gwen was a Team Blake contestant during season two.
Kat Perkins made the interesting choice to sing “Get Lucky.” Usher didn’t feel he needed to say much after the performance – he thought it was incredible. Shakira thought it was cool that Kat is always true to herself. Adam said the performance was all Kat and added, “Bottom three, my ass,” referring to her landing in the bottom three last week.
Kristen Merlin sang “I Drive Your Truck.” Blake told Kristen she did a great job and added she had made a believer out of him from the blind auditions until now…and Adam loved her so much he even copied her hairstyle. Usher said wherever Kristen was heading on that truck, she was on the right track. Shakira was moved, and Kristen gave her all.
Newly announced coach Pharrell Williams performed his new single, “Come Get It Bae.” Pharrell will join the show this fall, for Season Seven.
Delvin Choice sang “I Believe I Can Fly.” Blake said it was powerful and the perfect song choice. Usher told Delvin he shows up every week and gives a great performance. Adam didn’t think there was a better song Delvin could have done – he was so happy with what Delvin had accomplished, regardless of what would happen in the competition.
Audra McLaughlin was up next, with “Forgive.” Shakira said it was awesome and loved that the note she held seemed effortless. Blake agreed and added that Audra is unstoppable. He found himself wrapped up in her performance.
Gwen Stefani took the stage and performed “Hollaback Girl.” She will also be joining Pharrell as a judge next season, and he even accompanied her on stage for part of her performance. Pharrell actually co-wrote the song, so the two go way back. The two caught up with Carson after the performance – both are eager to join “The Voice.”
Jake Worthington battled a little illness to sing “Hillbilly Deluxe.” Shakira told Jake he had her air drumming, and his performance was very frontal and aggressive. Adam commented on how cool Jake is and how much he learns about real deal country. Blake congratulated Jake on introducing America to Jake the artist.
Christina Grimmie closed the show with Lil’ Wayne’s “How to Love.” Blake told Christina she looks and sounds like a superstar and did a great job. Usher was trying to figure out if she wanted to be a hip hop artist and said it was definitely a great performance. Shakira thought the arrangement showed such artistry, and her registry is out of this world. Adam thanked Christina for trusting him to do this with her.
