'The Voice' season 5 top 6: Matthew Schuler covers One Direction

"The Voice" season five rolled on Dec. 2 on NBC as the top six finalists hit the stage to perform for a spot in the top five. Former competition front runner Matthew Schuler, whose arguably disastrous Nov. 25 performance nearly led to his elimination, began his comeback attempt with a rendition of a recent One Direction hit that scored with the coaches.

The 21-year old Schuler took to the stage to perform "Story of My Life" for his family, who sat in the live audience. While it was a decent offering, it only gave him a few moments to really shine vocally, and given the tremendous talent he's shown over the course of the competition, it felt like a disappointment. Although he'll no doubt get attention for covering One Direction, it won't be because it was an outstanding performance.

Still, the mentors liked what he brought to the table. Adam Levine admitted that he wasn't familiar with the song, but praised Schuler for taking the risk of straying away from his previous rendition of "Hallelujah," which soared to number one on the iTunes top 200 chart. Schuler's mentor Christina Aguilera praised him for reinventing the song in his own way.

The Twitterverse reaction to the performance was mixed. While TV Line columnist Michael Slezak bluntly quipped "It's not good when you get outsung by One Direction. #thevoice," former season five finalist Kat Robichaud sang a different tune, tweeting "@MSchulerMusic, are you making me kind of like One Direction? :) It will never happen again. haha. @NBCTheVoice #voicetop6."

To see if Schuler successfully claims a spot in the top five or if he winds up at the bottom of the heap, watch "The Voice" season five top six results show Dec. 3 on NBC.
