In the new episode of “The Voice” (originally airing October 14, 2013) the battle rounds begin as the coaches start trimming down their teams. Each coach will match two singers against each other to sing a song then choose one of them to win and move on. The other coaches can then steal any of the losers. The pressure is on as the coaches and their guest mentors teach the artists then put them in the ring to go head to head.
First up Coach Adam Levine pairs female singer Grey against male singer Nic Hawk. Adam’s guest mentor is singer, songwriter and OneRepublic front man Ryan Tedder. He gives them Jessie J’s “Domino” and says he matched them up because he wanted two people with totally opposite styles. During the battle Nic seems more energetic, but Grey has a certain coolness to her and both of them do well. It isn’t an easy choice but Adam chooses to save Grey because he feels she has more potential. It isn’t bad news for Nic because Blake steals him saying that Adam made a mistake by not keeping him.
The second battle is from Coach Christina Aguilera’s team. She matches two young ladies with big voices by having Amber Nicole and Timyra-Joi face off. Her guest mentor is singer, songwriter Ed Sheeran. She chooses to have them perform “Listen” by Beyoncé. It is a big, soaring ballad and fits right into both singers’ wheelhouses. Both girls were nervous during rehearsal, but during the battle both girls were fantastic. They bring the house down and bring Christina to tears. She struggles to choose one, but finally decides to keep Amber Nicole. Blake Shelton says that he made a mistake by not stealing Timyra-Joi.
Blake’s first battle matches Justin Chain against Shelbie Z. His guest adviser is the legendary Cher. Blake said after seeing her perform last year on the show he thought she would be a great adviser and was shocked when she said yes. Both singers are country singers and they freak out a little seeing Cher. For the battle Blake chooses the duet “Don’t You Wanna Stay” by Jason Aldean and Kelly Clarkson. The battle is fun and both singers sound very good. In the end Shelbie is just a little better and wins the battle.
Coach Cee Lo Green is next to choose his first battle pairing and he matches Anthony Paul against Caroline Pennell. For his adviser Cee Lo brought in Latin singer Miguel. He gives these two young singers “As Long As You Love Me” by Justin Bieber. These two singers are polar opposites and it makes for an interesting almost subdued performance. They are both good in their own way. Anthony’s voice fits the style more, but Caroline’s odd, interesting vocal style makes it unique. Cee Lo praises them both, but ever the lover of the unique, he chooses to keep Caroline. Anthony’s ride, however, isn’t over yet because Christina decides to steal him.
For the fifth battle of the night Adam pairs powerhouse singers Donna Allen and Tessanne Chin together. He gives them “Next To Me” by Emeli Sande. In rehearsals Tessanne was being overpowered by Donna, but she seemed to start finding her niche in the song. The battle sees both singers go for it. They hit some big notes and show off all their vocal tricks. Adam says he thinks they are both world class singers who could win the show, but he chooses to save Tessanne. She seems shocked by the news and immediately breaks down.
For the final battle of the night, Christina puts Briana Cuoco (if the name sounds familiar her sister is "Big Bang Theory" star Kaley Cuoco who was in the audience) and Jacquie Lee together. She chooses “House of the Rising Sun” by The Animals for them. She wants to see them give a female twist to the classic. Christina gives them both some great advice and it sets up the best battle of the night. Both ladies leave it all on the stage and match each other note of for note. It makes the choice a very difficult one. Christina says they both dug deep and won this battle, but she can only choose one so she decides to save Jacquie. Without a pause Cee Lo and Blake both push their buttons to steal Briana. They both make their pitches to her and Briana decides to go with Blake.
This episode of “The Voice” comes to an end with Briana back stage celebrating her new life in the competition with her family. Tomorrow night on NBC the battle rounds continue.
