‘The Voice’ season 2, is it family friendly programming? (video)

NBC’s singing competition show “The Voice” returned to airwaves on February 5, 2012,  immediately following the Super Bowl.  Christians looking for family friendly television programming may find themselves on the fence when it comes to “The Voice.”  It depends upon what you view as family friendly, verbally offensive, and overall appropriateness for children.  The family friendly programming watchdog “Parents Television Council” reviewed “The Voice” and offered their official rating.  You may or may not agree with their decision, but it may serve as a general guide for your television viewing choices.

According to the Parents Television Council review of “The Voice,” the show is not recommended for teens and children under the age of 14.  Though “The Voice” does not feature outright sex or highly offensive language, however, there are sexual innuendos and mild language that may be inappropriate for younger viewers.  The show is void of any violence, causing the Parents Television Council to come to their conclusion.  Judges on the show include Blake Shelton, Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green, and Adam Levine.  Carson Daly hosts the show.

Some Christians separate music into classifications including secular and Christian (such as Gospel, Praise, Worship, and Contemporary).  Song selections for “The Voice” would be classified as secular including current hits and songs from days past.  There is not anything Christian families would find inherently offensive to the song choices, but the chances of hearing any “Christian” songs are slim.

Are you a Christian that watches “The Voice?”  Do you watch the show with your children and if so, how do you handle the sexual innuendos often made during the judging portion of the show?  One of the co-producers for “The Voice” is Mark Burnett.  Burnett is an admitted Christian and formerly produced the series “Touched by an Angel.”  In January 2012, it was announced Mark Burnett will produce a new reality series with television evangelist Joel Osteen.
