The battle rounds came to an end tonight on “The Voice” (originally airing March 25, 2014) with Usher the only coach left with a steal as the night began. As the battles began he said that he will be very selective with who he chooses to use it on.
The first battle of the night came from Team Adam featured Cary Laine vs Sam Behymer. It’s a battle of the country singer against the indie pop artist. Adam selected Ed Sheeran’s “Give Me Love.” The song is a little out of both ladies’ comfort zone and caused them to struggle. Both women did pretty well during the actual battle, and Adam had kind words for both. He said he made his decision based on who had the most potential and chose Sam.
Kaleigh Glanton took on Noah Lis in Blake Shelton’s first battle pairing of the night. Blake gave them Michael Bublé’s “Everything” which crooner Noah was very happy with, but it caused Kaleigh to struggle some. There was obvious chemistry between the singers during rehearsal that carried over and made for a smooth, charming battle. Blake had kind things to say to both before choosing to keep Kaleigh because of her unique tone.
The third battle also came from Blake. We only got a quick recap of the pairing that put Ryan Whyte Malone up against Cali Tucker on “What’s Love Got to Do with It?” by Tina Turner. Blake chose Ryan to stay on his team. In another recap, we saw a battle from Team Adam that put Christina Grimmie in the ring with Joshua Howard. They sang Taylor Swift’s “I Knew You Were Trouble” and Christina came away with the win. Team Shakira got in the quick recap game with a showdown featuring country singers Lindsay Bruce and Kristen Merlin with Kristen coming out victorious.
In the last battle of the night, Team Shakira’s Cierra Mickens faced off against Emily B. to sing “Brave” by Sara Bareilles. Both women have big voices, but had some struggles. Shakira and Miranda Lambert both encouraged them to not mimic the original, but make it their own. The battle was good and built as it went along. These two have such similar voices that there was no clear cut winner, which, in the end is how it turned out. Shakira struggled with her decision before choosing Emily. After saying her goodbyes and walking off stage, Usher pressed his button and used his last steal on Cierra saying that she had something you can’t teach – star quality.
As this episode of “The Voice” came to an end they gave us a sneak peek at next week’s show. With a new twist, there will be another round of battles with each coach having one steal for that round. The pairings will have to agree on the song they sing and Coldplay’s Chris Martin will advise all teams. “The Voice” continues to evolve as they work to keep it fresh. It should be a fun, and interesting new round to the show.
