Last night the all new playoffs began on “The Voice” (originally airing April 8, 2014). In this new round of the ever evolving, very popular singing competition, all five members of Team Blake had their chance to take the stage and sing. After all five performed, and we heard from each of his fellow judges, Blake Shelton was forced to eliminate two of the members of his team.
Audra McLaughlin chose to sing “A Broken Wing” by Martina McBride. The song fit her voice very well and she seemed to really enjoy the moment. The judges liked her and said that she looked like she was at home on stage singing this song. Blake was already agonizing over how he was going to make the choice of who to keep.
Next to the stage was Ryan Whyte Maloney who chose Shinedown’s “Second Chance.” It was a very good choice for him, and while he wasn’t perfect, it was clear that he is getting better and better as the show goes along.
Singing Zedd’s “Clarity,” Madilyn Paige was next up. This is one of those songs that some artists seem to pull off well and others crash and burn with. She took a little more of an understated approach to the song and pulled it off very well. Her former coach Usher seemed impressed.
Country singer Jake Worthington took the stage next and sang “Anywhere With You” by Jake Owen which he dedicated to his longtime girlfriend. Jake, for the most part, was his normal, strong self. He had some issues here and there and even acknowledged them when Usher asked him how he thought he did.
Last up was Sisaundra Lewis who chose Billy Joel’s “New York State of Mind.” While the other four contestants would leave any of the coaches with a difficult decision to make, Sisaundra blew them away and set herself apart from the pack. Adam Levine had a few critiques about how she started the song, but beyond that she won raves even causing Usher to remark, “You are our teacher.”
Blake was then left with the difficult choice of choosing three of these singers to take with him into the live performance round. To no surprise he kept Sisaundra Lewis and Jake Worthington. Joining them was Audra McLaughlin. Ryan Whyte Maloney and Madilyn Paige were sent home.
The playoff rounds continue next week as “The Voice” airs at its normal time of 8 p.m. on NBC.
