The Season 6 finale was set Tuesday night when "The Voice" revealed the results of America's votes, paring down the Top 5 to the three remaining finalists that would vye for the title and album contract on the last couple shows of the season next week.
It's been a whirlwind of eliminations for "The Voice," Michael Slezak of TVLine pointed out in his recap on May 13. He cynically noted that the ratings juggernaut of a show certainly wasn't worried about keeping the finalists around very long, the producers allowing five finalists to be booted from the show in just eight days.
The night was full of new music as Judge Usher and country supergroup Rascal Flatts performed songs from new studio albums. Usher's will be released later this year. Rascal Flatts just released their latest album -- in fact, on the day of the results show.
But even better for "The Voice" fans, Season 5 winner Tessanne Chin returned, as did finalists Will Champlin and Jacquie Lee, to sing their new singles and provide a taste of their forthcoming albums.
But when all the new music had been sung, host Carson Daly was left with the task of revealing which finalists would be competing in the Season 6 finale.
First to make it through: Jake Worthington of Team Blake (Shelton). Jake's entry into the finale could secure for Blake Shelton his fourth "The Voice" title.
Second to get into the Season 6 finale: Team Usher's Josh Kaufman. Usher has yet to win but he did have the Season 4 runner-up: Michelle Chamuel.
That left three women standing: Kristen Merlin of Team Shakira, Kat Perkins of Team Adam (Levine), and Christina Grimmie, also of Team Adam. This trio ensured that either Judge Shakira or Adam would be left without a team member in the finale.
After the live Instant Save (via Twitter) vote, America chose Christina Grimmie as the third and final contestant for the season finale. (This would mark the second time Shakira had failed to place a contestant in the season finale.) If Christina should pull off a victory in the season finale, Team Adam would score its third win in six seasons and move into a tie with Team Blake for number of seasonal victories (three each).
"The Voice" will announce the Season 6 winner on Tuesday, May 20, in the Season 6 results reveal. The finale performance show airs on Monday, May 19, beginning at 8 p.m. (EST) on NBC Television.
