Frontrunners at season's start on shows like "The Voice," "X Factor," and "American Idol" often fall by the wayside along the way to the season finale. On Season 5 of "The Voice," that general rule proved to be true for one finalist: Matthew Schuler. But one other frontrunner hung in there (thanks to America's votes) and another who had relatively good odds of winning (fourth best at season's start) made the finale as well. Even the current long shot wasn't such a long shot back at season's start. So who's got the edge among the three remaining finalists? Who do the professional oddsmakers think will win Season 5 of "The Voice?"
Team Christina (Aguilera) started the season with two of her team members as having the best odds of winning it all. With Matthew Schuler's dismissal in sixth place, the finalist with the best odds was knocked out of contention, leaving the space open for another finalist. That finalist was Jacquie Lee, whose vocals have proved more than capable of carrying her to victory. And oddsmakers at Bovada.com have her currently, as of Dec. 14, at 1/1 odds of winning it all.
Still, it wasn't a long trip for the 16-year-old. She was Team Christina's second-best protege in the running at 4/1 odds.
Tessanne Chin from Team Adam (Levine) began the season with fourth-best odds. She has improved both her position and her odds, moving from 6/1 odds as part of the Top 10 to 7/5. That puts her at 0.4 off the pace (1.4/1) of Jacquie Lee.
Will Champlin, the third finalist to reach the Top 3 and, thus, the season finale, began the season with the eighth best odds of winning (9/1). He has improved his odds, but remains behind the other two, just as he did at the start. Still, the Team Adam team member stands at 13/4 (3.25/1) odds to win.
Having two contestants in the finale definitely gives Team Adam a numerical advantage (2/1) of being the winning coach. Whether he wins or not is entirely up to America (well, and those votes garnered via iTunes). If he does, it will be his second win as a coach on "The Voice." He won the inaugural season, coaching Javier Colon to the title.
Since then, though, it's been all Blake Shelton. Team Blake saw Jermaine Paul, Cassadee Pope, and Danielle Bradbery take the last three titles.
All of which means: If Jacquie Lee can pull off a victory in the finale, Christina Aguilera will score her first win as a coach.
Host Carson Daly, talking with Zap2It just after Matthew Schuler's Instant Save during the Top 8 results show, noted that Team Adam still had three contestants in the running and that "the odds are clearly in his favor. But anything can happen. The right song at the right time will win this thing."
Those odds, as far as contenders are concerned, are still in Team Adam's favor.
But as far as the individual finalists are concerned, Jacquie Lee is favored. Not by much, but not by much might be all that she needs.
"The Voice" Season 5 live finale airs on Monday, Dec. 16, at 8 p.m. EST. The results reveal of the Season 5 winner will take place live on Tuesday, Dec. 17, at 9 p.m.
