"The Voice" 2013 resumed Oct. 28 on NBC with a first night of knockout round action that saw the field of season five hopefuls trimmed from 32 to just 26. Three-time show winner Blake Shelton sent two pairs of his proteges to do battle, and by evening's end, fan favorite Holly Henry and Briana Cuoco, sister of "The Big Bang Theory" star Kaley Cuoco, saw their respective stints on the show come to a close.
First up to fight for a single spot in the live shows representing Team Blake were Henry and Nic Hawk, the quirky performer who was stolen from Adam Levine's team during the battle rounds. While Henry brought her signature haunting lilt to Radiohead's "Creep," Hawk outshone the tiny blonde with a creative remix of Christina Aguilera's "Genie in a Bottle." After cursing what he called "an apples and oranges decision," Shelton finally named Hawk the winner, sealing Henry's fate. Hawk was stunned to emerge victorious against someone as "gifted" as Henry, but Shelton explained his rationale, calling Hawk "one of the most unique and entertaining personalities" to appear on "The Voice."
The second Team Blake knockout featured Cuoco and pageant girl Shelbie Z. Cuoco delivered a lackluster rendition of "Don't Speak" that was gently panned by the coaches, while Shelbie powered her way through Carrie Underwood's "Last Name." After praising both ladies for their shared excellent work ethic, Shelton kept Shelbie on his team, explaining that she'd simply done a better job that her competitor.
But Hawk and Shelbie weren't the only two contestants to advance to the live shows as members of Team Blake, as Shelton used his sole knockout round save to snag the risk-taking Cole Vosbury. Originally a member of CeeLo Green's team, Vosbury lost his knockout battle with veteran Jonny Gray, and though Adam Levine tried desperately to convince him to join his team, the long-haired, hat-wearing singer opted to go with Shelton.
"The Voice" 2013 continues Oct. 29 with a second night of knockout round action that will determine the final slate of contestants who will compete in the live shows.
