"The Voice" 2013 resumed Oct. 21 on NBC with a third night of battle round action by the remaining hopefuls. Although six pairs performed for a spot in the knockout round, only a single set of girls took to the stage to go head to head, and in a twist of fate, both advanced.
Coach Christina Aguilera opted to pair up biker bar singer Destinee Quinn and former teen model Lina Gaudenzi "because they bring a very soft sensibility for a song." She gave them the Dixie Chicks' "I'm Not Ready to Make Nice" in order to force them to emerge from their respective shells. Lina claimed it didn't intimidate her to perform a country tune with country singer Destinee, and Destinee said she didn't feel like she had an advantage because of Lina's ability to do "all these crazy runs" that she can't do.
During their mentoring session with Christina and guest Ed Sheeran, the superstar pressed Destinee and Lina to get into the emotion of the song and really own the words. Christina encouraged them to "let go" of their inhibitions and really fight for a spot in the competition.
When the time came to do battle both girls hit the stage ready for a "The Voice" rumble. Both absolutely nailed their performances, delivering plenty of emotion along with solid vocals.
Christina gave them a standing ovation. CeeLo Green loved both girls, but especially appreciated how Destinee "lived that song out loud." Adam Levine liked how they connected to the song, but noted some technical issues on both sides. He said that due to her "chops and potential," he'd choose Lina. Blake Shelton said that he'd initially doubted Destinee's connection to the song, but she recovered well in the end. He too said that technically speaking, he'd declare Lina the winner. Christina praised both of them for connecting to the song, and said she was "torn between emotion and range." After a long pause, she finally named Destinee the victor because of her ability to make people feel the music.
Before Lina had a chance to speak to the coaches, Adam hit his button to add her to his team. He praised her "potential" and said he thought they could do well together. He called her "a diamond in the rough" and said he was "excited" to see how she'd perform. A tearful Lina called being saved "awesome."
"The Voice" 2013 resumes Oct. 22 on NBC as the final six pairs face off for the last battle rounds of the season.
