The Virginia Numismatic Association hosted the 2013 state coin convention last weekend. The three day free event ended Sunday. Coin collectors and dealers from over 18 states were available for the public show at the Fredericksburg Expo Center in Central Park from September 27 -29.
Youth activities and scouting badge certification programs were a big hit, especially with Carlton S. who liked the old wheat pennies. He said that “it was cool holding something that old in my hand.” Badge requirements were completed and children enjoyed a scavenger hunt on Saturday. Other people perused the dealer tables looking for information on coin collecting and purchasing items needed to add to personal collections.
Many coin dealers attended the convention include local such as Fines’ Coins and S & W Coins, both of Fredericksburg. Several local coin club members were volunteers throughout the weekend. One is also a local artist who drew a clever welcome sign that included Keith, one of the security guards on hand for the show.
The Virginia Numismatic Association also held its annual banquet Saturday night at the Hampton Inn next door to the Expo Center. Approximately 45 VNA members and guests joined to hear the keynote speaker, Ms. Miley Tucker-Frost. Ms. Tucker-Frost is an acclaimed sculptor and has had works commissioned by the US Treasury.
