The Village Inn and Pub is an oasis on St. Simons Island

JIMMY JACOBS SOUTHERN OUTDOOR ADVENTURES

The Georgia Coast offers a wide range of outdoor activities, from fishing and paddling to birding and biking. One of the better places to combine all of those is on St. Simons Island. The isle has a fishing pier, bike trails and miles of marsh creeks for kayaking. And virtually any direction you turn you'll see a menagerie of shore and songbirds.

But, just because you are enjoying the outdoors, doesn't require that you "rough it." Situated in the heart of the Historic Village and Lighthouse District of St. Simons is an oasis of coastal hospitality worth sampling.

The Village Inn and Pub is located on Mallery Street within walking distance the shops, restaurants and fishing pier in the village. Its quaint setting and laid-back atmosphere are guaranteed to quickly relax and put you on island time

The concierge, breakfast sun porch and pub are located in an originally renovated beach cottage that dates from the 1930s. The 28-room inn surrounds and was constructed to match the décor of that original building.  Each of the rooms is named for a historical figure that had an impact on St. Simons Island history and a short biography of each of them hangs in their namesake room. The swimming pool courtyard and  flora on the grounds provide the feel of being in a semi-tropical garden.

Though you may get the feeling you have been transported back to early 20th century St. Simons, the Village Inn provides all the modern amenities. Private baths, high-speed wireless Internet service, and televisions are in each room.

Continental breakfast is served in the main cottage each morning and the area in front of the stone fireplace also doubles as a sitting room. After 5 p.m. this area becomes the Pub, serving libations across a solid mahogany bar that was shipped in from an English pub. One of the specialties of the house is a wild orchid martini. But, whether you drop by to watch a ball game on the TV, chat with friends or catch the live music on weekends, the pub provides the perfect venue.

When meal time rolls around you might want to head out toward East Beach and stop off on Ocean Boulevard at the Saltwater Cowboy. Owned by the same management team as the Village Inn, the restaurant and bar provide service on a level comparable to the inn.

For lunch or dinner, you can’t go wrong with their Kickin’ Cowboy Calamari appetizer or the Georgia coastal favorite of shrimp and grits. In the evenings you’ll want to hang around for the live music on the deck as well.

Regardless of why you find yourself on St. Simons Island, the Village Inn and Pub and Saltwater Cowboy can add to the experience.
