Their name means, "western education is sinful." They were founded in 2001, by Mohammed Yusuf, who was killed by Nigerian security forces in 2009.
Boko Haram was founded as an indigenous group, and became a radical jihadist group in 2009.
They are a vicious branch of radical Muslims who are hell-bent on killing anyone who criticizes their belief system. They reject anything that is influenced by the western world.
The Boko Haram are ranked second on the global terror list, according to a report by the U.S. government. Currently there is a $7 million bounty on their leader Abubakar Shekau.
On Monday Aug. 19, the Nigerian Army reported that Shekau, could be dead. According to FOX News: "Intelligence reports available to the (military) revealed that Abubakar Shekau, the most dreaded and wanted Boko Haram terrorist leader, may have died."
It's unconfirmed whether or not Shekau died from the wounds he suffered in a clash with the Nigerian Army on June 30. The battle in which he was wounded happened in Sambisa forest in northeastern Nigeria.
Under Shekau's leadership, Boko Haram is said to be responsible for 4,000 deaths. The website Persecution.org reports that over 900 Christians were killed by Boko Haram in 2012.
Boko Haram is responsible for the death of a Nigerian pastor in May who was executed with three shots to the head. The pastor was overhead, by his wife, saying to the terrorists before they shot him: "I will never deny my Savior."
Last month they were responsible for killing at least 27 people, "many of them children who were shot and burned alive," according to France 24.
On July 26, Boko Haram was reportedly responsible for beheading three pastors. One of the pastors was heard saying, "over my dead body" when given a choice to renounce his faith or die.
Early last week, Aug. 13, it was reported they killed at least 56 people died in two attacks in the northeastern Nigerian state of Borno, according to Bloomberg Business Week.
Also on Aug. 13, The Christian Science Monitor says that Boko Haram appears to have come up with a new tactic in killing people. The Monitor reported the following:
"Early Sunday morning as villagers prayed, men in camouflage crept into a local mosque and opened fire, killing at least 44 worshipers and sending dozens of others to the hospital, according to local security sources. Some 20 miles away, 12 other people were killed in a similar attack."
According to Nobel Prize-winning Nigerian author Wole Soyinka, Boko Haram's strength is in their ability to change tactics. She also said: "Boko Haram has kept evolving and changing, it’s constantly adapting to the security environment.”
Killing a person while they are praying shows how vicious Boko Haram is in their methods of murdering people. What kind of coward kills a person while they are praying, better yet what kind of person does it take to kill children or burn them alive. Obviously the cowards have a name and they are the Boko Haram.
