It's official! A "Veronica Mars" movie is finally going to be made after reaching its goal of $2 million in just 12 hours.
The creator and star of the cult TV show took to social media yesterday in order to raise at least $2 million in 30 days so they could fund a "Veronica Mars" movie. Fans of the show didn't wait a month to come together for the cause. Their dedication helped raise that amount within a 12 hour time span. At the writing of this article, the pledges have reached $2.5 million and counting.
The movie project page has special messages from the show's creator Rob Thomas (no, not the singer!) and Veronica Mars herself Kristen Bell. Also, as incentive for fans, the more money they donate, the better the prizes will be. Freebies include a signed movie poster, exclusive "Veronica Mars" t-shirt, a digital copy of the film within days of its debut in theaters, and a PDF copy of the shooting script.
EW caught up with Thomas and he had this to say about the project reaching its goal so quickly:
My mind is blown. I’ve been fantasizing about this and had to tell myself, ‘Stop it, Rob, you’re being silly. You’re setting yourself up for disappointment.’And now today has exceeded the wildest pipe dream I let myself entertain. Holy cow. We better make a good movie. These amazing fans have stepped up. We better deliver.
Kristen Bell was equal amounts shocked and pleased with the whole thing:
I knew "Veronica Mars" fans were cool, but I had no idea they could rally with such power. They are unstoppable — just like Veronica. I will have a permanent blush on my face, feeling so lucky to be associated with this entire thing.
For Rob Thomas and Kristen Bell, the "Veronica Mars" movie project is a labor of love. They've been trying to make a movie happen since the show was cancelled back in 2007. Since Warner Bros. owns all the rights to "Mars" and Thomas and Bell finally talked to them about the Kickstarter idea and the WB agreed to back the project if they raised enough money.
And the rest, as they say, is history.
