What’s new in the 2013 veggie garden? Every year you can count on all the seeds suppliers to provide an array of interesting new cultivars for gardeners everywhere to try. Some are smashing successes that become favorites for a hundred years, and some are wretched failures. Let’s see what’s out there…
Territorial Seeds has something called Easypick Gold Zucchini which purports to have virtually no irritating spines and an open growth habit, that makes it, well, easy to pick. At 50 days it’s quite early too! Interesting…
Also from Territorial here comes Hopi Blue Corn. A triple threat it seems, it can be eaten young as sweet corn, ground for flour when dried or used decoratively. Hope the raccoons aren’t paying attention!
And Territorial has an interesting carrot too, called Yellowbunch. Nine inches long and twisty these would make great snowman’s noses, although the catalog fails to mention that. Touted as mild, sweet and excellent for juicing, and ready to be picked in 65 days, it could well be a winner!
Burpee always has a new tomato, you can count on it but this is an eye catcher called “Super Sauce” it purports to be a Roma style tomato tipping the scales at two pounds each! That, folks could add up to a lot of sauce in a hurry. Fast at seventy days if it lives up to advanced billing, it could be special.
Also from Burpee, “Shooting Stars” eggplant is highly ornamental, the fruit purple and white on a 24” plant. At 4” maximum length it seems a bit small for a serious crop but perhaps its eye appeal compensates.
Burpee’s eye catching “Good as Gold” cubanel style pepper is a brilliant orange and is touted as being delicious cooked or raw. Peppers are 7” and described as productive. This is a sweet pepper Ladies and Gentlemen, no heat here.
Well that is at least a start we have a few more catalogs to tell you about another day. Meanwhile, why not check these two websites out and see what else might tickle your fancy!
