Nineteen-year-old, Banting (AUS) and eighteen-year-old, Bailey Nagy (Oahu) have won the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 2-Star Vans US Open Pro Junior in cloudy, wave-starved conditions at Huntington Beach Pier.
Skip McCullough of La Jolla brought a crowd of spectators to watch his heat in the Men’s Junior division semis. When he shot the pier, the crowd went wild. Unfortunately, his impressive surfing was not enough to move on. Nonetheless, his fans continued to clap and chant for him. The other semi heat proved to be exciting as well. The competitors went wave for wave, continuously changing the situation. Throughout the first semi, Cam Richards was on a mission. He was busy catching waves and staying south of the others in the heat. Matt Banting was full of tricks, doing an air reversal and sliding out on one particular wave. Maintaining the excitement of this heat, the air show continued into the finals. In the end, Matt Banting won. He shared the stage with fierce, second place competitor, Cam Richards. Banting spoke about deciding whether to stay where all of the guys were or to go outside. He warmly thanked everyone for their support.
In the Junior division, both the men and women struggled with riding out of their waves. This crucial element coupled with a lack of waves was a game changer. It would be Bailey Nagy who would take the Women’s Pro Junior. Meah Collins favored her backhand and had a brilliant, bright pink surfboard. Brianna Cope surfed her way out of a combination situation. She claimed a difficult and stylish ride. Mahina Maeda could not catch up to Bailey’s high scores. Bailey caught waves inside, and her three-turn waves made her virtually impossible to catch up with. This has been a long time coming for Bailey. Bailey Nagy commented about being stoked on “finaling an event after two years.” She is celebrating. She relayed, “Last night my Dad bought tickets to Mexico.” First thing in the morning, she will be taking her $2,000 prize purse to Mexico to catch some more waves.
Justin Quintal won the Joel Tudor Duct Tape Invitational once again. When asked how it felt, he simply responded: “It’s awesome [...].” The invitational is an “old-school” longboarding event. The competitors use single fin boards sans leash. Justin took away a $4,000 prize purse for his longboarding style.
Despite some sprinkling, the Van Doren Invitational skate finals were a go! The talent was immense, and the skill level unprecedented. However, it was Tershy who would take home the coveted, custom Fender guitar and $25,000 grand prize. Second place is not too shabby for Charlie Blair. He took home a prize of $15,000. Murillo Peres pocketed $10,000 for his third place finish.
Tomorrow kicks off the Women’s Semifinal event for the ASP Women’s World Championship Tour (WCT). Malia Manuel (HAW) will face off against Tyler Wright (AUS). Sally Fitzgibbons and Stephanie Gilmore will battle in an Australian semi. Today, Lakey Peterson and Stephanie Gilmore competed in a close heat. However, Steph Gilmore’s style and vertical snap impressed the judges. Malia Manuel matched her top result this season. Because tomorrow’s contest is a WCT event for the women, the spotlight is on the ladies. However, the Men’s Quarterfinalists for the ASP Qualifications Series (QS) Prime event have also been solidified. Local boy, Brett Simpson was able to defeat Bede Durbidge in a less than exciting heat, due to the lack of waves. To further upset the crowd, Cardoso defeated fan favorite, Josh Kerr.
