There will be some big changes in store for "The Vampire Diaries" this fall, as the popular CW show will be getting a heavy dose of green -- meaning that it will now be more energy-conscious while still working to produce the best episodes possible.

So who's the man behind the campaign? It's none other than Ian Somerhalder, who plays Damon on the show. In a chat with Zap2It, he explains both his personal reasons behind the campaign and his plan to make "Diaries" more environmentally-friendly:

"It takes a lot of power to run a movie set. We go through a lot of fuel. It's harmful, and we can start changing that a little bit. We can get rid of these noisy, stinky, disgusting gas generators. There's going to be a lot of thought that goes into this revolution that's going to happen. We're dealing with California Transportation Department, we're dealing with the Department of Defense, we're dealing with disaster relief — but we're also dealing with the entertainment industry. We'll be taking major productions green, like big concerts and music festivals. Greening the 'Vampire Diaries' set is a priority for me, which we're going to be doing this year."

Somerhalder also recently announced his plans to help victims suffering from the Gulf Coast oil spill. The actor grew up largely in the reason, and a number of big-time Hollywood celebrities (including Cameron Diaz and Justin Bieber) have done their part to help victims struggling to make ends meet.

Do you applaud Somerhalder for what he is doing? Feel free to share your thoughts with a comment and check back soon for more of the latest news.
