'The Vampire Diaries' to air backdoor pilot for 'The Originals' this spring

The Vampire Diaries has created quite the compelling vampire mythology backstory with characters like Klaus (Joseph Morgan) and the other Originals, but so far we have only been able to get little snippets of their lives and origins through flashbacks in the very twisty, dark present day drama of Mystic Falls. All that may be changing, though, as this fourth season includes an upcoming episode designed to be a backdoor pilot for a spin-off series of Morgan's own currently titled The Originals.

Entertainment Weekly first broke the news today about the potential spin-off by providing episode details about "The Originals." In it, "Klaus returns to the supernatural melting pot that is the French Quarter of New Orleans— a town he helped build centuries ago— and is reunited with his diabolical former protégé Marcel."

The mysterious Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin) is set to appear in the episode, too. The CW doesn't seem to want to let the former The Secret Circle star go, and this is certainly a clever way of keeping her, as her character could be much more prominent in a new series than the very-well established world of The Vampire Diaries that centers on Elena (Nina Dobrev).

A "backdoor pilot" is basically a pilot episode that can act as a standalone movie (to be aired even if the concept is not picked up to series) or, as in this case, an episode of an already existing series that can live in its own world while also showing the potential for further exploration in a new series.

Would you want to watch both The Vampire Diaries and a completely new show centered on Klaus, or are you liking the dose of Klaus you get in The Vampire Diaries as is? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

The Vampire Diaries airs on The CW on Thursday nights at 8 p.m. "The Originals" will air on April 25th 2013.
