Can you believe it's almost time for the "Vampire Diaries" season 5 finale? There are still a few episodes left of the season, but the end is drawing near, and on Thursday, April 24, the CW released promotional photos from episode 522, "Home."

The finale is described as "explosive" in the official synopsis and written by Caroline Dries and Brian Young and directed by Chris Grismer, and the description itself hints at what's still to come before "Home." Damon (Ian Somerhalder) is "heartbroken by an unexpected tragedy" and trying to hold himself together while also pushing Bonnie (Kat Graham) harder than ever to figure out a way to stop the disintegration of the Other Side.

Elena (Nina Dobrev) takes matters into her own hands and demands that Liv (Penelope Mitchell) and Luke (Chris Brochu) help her, but Liv refuses to cooperate until Caroline (Candice Accola) provides her with some personal motivation. Is Caroline going to threaten Luke? Putting her brother's life in danger could be just the right move to get her to do what they need. Speaking of Liv and Caroline, an off-hand remark about Stefan (Paul Wesley) from the witch gets a surprisingly emotional response from the vampire. Stefan and Caroline have been getting closer and closer. What could the finale hold for their relationship?

Meanwhile, Sheriff Forbes (Marguerite MacIntyre) is horrified when Markos (Raffi Barsoumian) uses violence against Tyler/Julian (Michael Trevino) to prove that the Travelers now control Mystic Falls. New information from the Sheriff leads to Damon coming up with a dangerous plan, one that relies on split-second timing from Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) and Matt (Zach Roerig).

As conditions on the Other Side worsen, Bonnie takes the opportunity to settle an old score, suggesting the return of someone familiar. Finally, Damon's plan leads to a massive explosion in Mystic Falls, and "everyone is caught up in the confusion, leaving a trail of heroism, sacrifice, relief and despair." None of this really sounds good for anyone.

The "Home" photos in the slideshow offer a look at Tyler/Julian being restrained and facing Sheriff Forbes and Markos (and also in chains). Plus, check out Damon parked in front of the "Welcome to Mystic Falls" sign, Elena with Damon, Bonnie and Caroline, Grams (Jasmine Guy) behind Bonnie and more. What has Elena looking shocked in one of the photos? What will Elena and Damon and Elena and Caroline be talking about?

"The Vampire Diaries" season 5 airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. on the CW. "Home" airs May 15. What do you think of the season 5 finale photos?
