'The Vampire Diaries' season 5 episode 16 clip: Liv still has a lot to learn

There's a new witch on "The Vampire Diaries," but as the sneak peek the CW released Monday, March 17, for this week's episode 516, "While You Were Sleeping," shows, Liv (Penelope Mitchell) still has a lot to learn.

In this week's episode of "The Vampire Diaries," Elena (Nina Dobrev) is going to be dealing with the virus and trying to get caught up on what she missed, while Damon (Ian Somerhalder) is going to have to figure out how to make a disturbing confession to her. When he finally tells her the truth about what he's been up to, Damon and Elena come to a new agreement about their relationship.

While looking through Dr. Wes' files, Caroline (Candice Accola) discovers a frightening secret, but Enzo (Michael Malarkey) shows up and claims he has the solution, so Caroline and Stefan end up with a group of Travelers, including Sloan (Caitlin McHugh), who reveals new information on the importance of doppelgangers.

Meanwhile, Elena runs into Luke (Chris Brochu), a student who seems to know her, but she doesn't remember meeting him, on the mostly deserted Whitmore campus during spring break. He wants to drown his sorrows after his boyfriend dumped him, so he suggests they spend the break getting drunk together, but instead, she sends him on an "urgent mission" to find Bonnie (Kat Graham) and Liv.

Those words – "urgent mission" – don't sound good, so it's probably not a good thing that the "While You Were Sleeping" sneak peek shows that Liv has a long way to go. While she's busy celebrating what she's accomplished so far as a newbie witch, Bonnie tests her instead of praising her and pours salt and tells her to set it on fire. However, Liv can't perform the simple spell. "Guess your résumé still needs a little padding," Bonnie comments. Go Bonnie!

"The Vampire Diaries" season 5 airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. on the CW. What do you think of Liv so far?
